Even though they outshot the Florida Panthers 32-18 and had an expected goals advantage of 5.61 to 1.88, the Edmonton Oilers were unable to find the back of the net in a 3-0 loss in Game 1. Connor McDavid suggested that the “hockey gods” balanced things out following their surprising Game 6 victory over the Dallas Stars.
Sergei Bobrovsky of the Panthers put on an impressive display in goal, establishing the team as strong contenders for Game 2 on home ice. They have successfully killed 30 consecutive penalties, resulting in three consecutive low-scoring games and five out of the last seven. Despite the Panthers having the best defense in the playoffs, their offensive performance has been lacking, with only one game out of their last nine where they scored more than two goals.
