Washington Sports Betting: Best WA Online Underscoreg Sites 2024

Washington state legalized sports betting in March 2020, but with a caveat that avid fans of betting sites don’t exactly appreciate — it’s limited to casino grounds. Tribal casinos can run retail sportsbooks and mobile apps, but bettors must be physically on the premises to do any Washington sports betting.
With such restrictions, only a handful of tribal casinos provide online apps alongside their retail sportsbooks, like the BetMGM at Emerald Queen Casino (BetMGM EQC) app. Let’s look at what this entails and what you can expect from sports betting in Washington.

Washington betting promos and bonuses

Because of the limitations imposed on online sports betting in Washington, there are few bonuses and promotions offered on the limited number of betting apps in the state. These apps were primarily created for use within physical sportsbooks, so promotional offers are scarce, if they exist at all.

The situation may evolve as BetMGM and Caesars have established sports betting apps in Washington. DraftKings and other key players have retail sportsbooks and are looking to expand into the online market. Consequently, there is potential for Washington sportsbook promotions as the market expands.

Additionally, it is important to note that many brick-and-mortar casinos that allow online betting also offer unique promotions for customers to take advantage of.

Top Washington betting sites

Based on our most recent count, there are only three sportsbooks in Washington that offer online betting sites or mobile apps.

Most other casinos have a physical sportsbook where you can place bets in person. Some also offer the option to create your bet online using a smartphone, but you will still need to visit a kiosk to officially place your wager.

Below is a list of all Washington betting sites that are available for use as long as you are located within the tribal casino premises.

Why the BetMGM EQC app is the best sportsbook in Washington 🦁

BetMGM has partnered with two tribal casinos in Washington, the Emerald Queen Casino & Hotel in Tacoma and the Emerald Queen Casino in Fife, to offer sports betting services. In addition to the physical betting locations, customers can also place wagers through the BetMGM Emerald Queen Casino app, designed exclusively for these casinos.

MGM Resorts International is a top sports betting operator globally, providing a high-quality experience for all customers, including online bettors at Emerald Queen casino locations in Washington. The software mirrors the user-friendly BetMGM app found in other states, ensuring a seamless betting experience.

The app is accessible on both Android and iOS devices and can be downloaded from the App Stores or the Emerald Queen Casino website. To register and use the app, you must be at least 21 years old and physically present at the casino. Additionally, you will need to provide various documents such as your EQC Players Club card and photo identification.

BetMGM offers exceptional betting market options and sports event coverage for a wide range of popular sports including pro and college football, basketball, soccer, baseball, and more. They provide various betting options such as moneylines, spreads, props, and parlays. Additionally, their in-play live betting feature offers constantly updated odds for an enhanced betting experience.

The app is operational 24/7 as long as you are at one of the two casinos. For more details about the main betting app, similar to the one in Washington, read our comprehensive BetMGM review.

Other Washington online sportsbooks and sports betting apps

In Washington, you have many options for legally betting on sports, primarily at the 17 tribal casinos that have dedicated retail sportsbooks. However, only a couple, like the two Emerald Queen casinos, currently provide or plan to provide an online betting platform.

Because of Washington state law, tribal casinos in the area primarily emphasize their retail sportsbooks. Consequently, very few have an online platform or mobile app for betting within their establishments. Even the ones that do provide a handheld betting experience require patrons to bring their smartphones to a kiosk in order to place their wagers.

Currently, only two sportsbooks offer complete betting apps, but DraftKings is poised to enter the market soon. With two retail locations in the state and a top-rated sportsbook nationwide, DraftKings is likely to bring their app to Washington in the near future. Stay tuned for updates on when this may happen.

Let’s take a quick look at the existing mobile betting apps in the meantime.

Caesars Underscoreg app 🏛

Caesars has collaborated with three tribal casinos in Washington state to provide complete retail sportsbooks at Chewelah Casino, Spokane Tribe Casino, and Muckleshoot Casino.

However, only the first two locations have sports betting apps available for use on site. These apps are comparable to Caesars’ offerings in other states, featuring a user-friendly design, a wide range of betting options, and comprehensive coverage.

Visit our detailed Caesars review for further information.

Snoqualmie Casino Underscoreg

The Snoqualmie Casino Underscoreg app is the exclusive betting platform of the tribal casino located just a short 30-minute drive from downtown Seattle.

It is worth noting that a unique partnership exists between the casino and odds provider IGT. This app was the pioneer in entering the state, enabling users to place bets on a wide range of sports leagues and tournaments. You can easily download the app from the Snoqualmie Casino website and access instructions for registration along with a list of required documents to present in person.

Similar to other mobile betting applications in Washington, you are only able to access and use this app while physically present within the premises of Snoqualmie Casino.

How to start betting in Washington

In Washington, beginning a sports betting journey is unlike most other legal states. Instead of placing bets from the comfort of your own home, you are required to go to a physical sportsbook located at one of the state’s tribal casinos.

Here is a detailed guide outlining the step-by-step process.

1. Pick a sportsbook and visit it

Review our list or locate the nearest tribal casino offering a retail and online sportsbook. Verify the registration criteria and gather the required paperwork. Head to the casino, access their official website, and download the app. If the sportsbook offers a mobile site instead of an app, you can utilize that as well.

2. Register an account

In order to create an account, you must present required documents in person. These may include a player’s card or membership identification specific to the casino, as well as a valid photo ID and a completed W-9 tax form.

3. Deposit funds

Deposits can also be made in person at the designated kiosk once your account is set up. It’s important to note that the minimum deposit for these types of accounts is usually higher than on traditional sports betting sites. For instance, if you intend to use the BetMGM EQC app, the minimum deposit required is $100.

4. Place your bet

Feel free to relax and explore the betting options on the app. When you find a game or event you’re interested in, simply click on the odds to add the bet to your slip. Enter your stake and finalize the wager. Your bet will be processed and if you win, you can expect a payout after the game.

5. Collect a bonus

Washington online sportsbooks do not typically provide welcome bonuses as they do in other states. However, individual casinos and retail sportsbooks may offer promotions at various times throughout the year. Be sure to check for any perks that may be available when you sign up for an account.

6. Withdraw your winnings

If you have won some games and have a good amount of money in your account, you can start the withdrawal process through the app. Each app may have a slightly different procedure, but generally, you will need to make a withdrawal request in the app and then go to the casino cage to receive your cash.

How we rate and review Washington sportsbooks

While online sportsbooks in Washington may have limitations in their offerings and operations, we have a systematic approach for objectively reviewing them. As the market grows, our analysis will become more influential. Let’s review the criteria we have utilized.

Sports coverage

Comprehensive coverage of the sports world is essential for a successful betting app. In addition to the Big Four North American leagues, a variety of popular and niche sports should be included. This means offering markets for golf, tennis, F1, and MMA alongside the NFL, NBA, and major soccer leagues.

Market coverage and depth of prop bets

In addition to thorough sports coverage, a wide variety of betting options would enhance the overall experience. It would be beneficial to offer numerous markets for each game, including team and player props, to make the betting experience more engaging.

User experience and ease of use

We have ensured that the design quality, navigation, and other aspects of the app meet high standards to save you from wasting your time on a subpar app. Our recommendations only include betting apps that excel in performance.

Live betting features

It can be challenging to place live bets at a brick-and-mortar bookmaker in Washington, which is why online sportsbooks in the state must offer in-play betting. While most apps do provide this feature, only a select few stand out due to legal restrictions. We have evaluated the speed at which they update odds, any technical issues we experienced, and the overall range of live betting options offered.

Washington retail sportsbooks

While extended online sports betting may not be a priority in Washington’s long-term plans, players still have access to a variety of retail sportsbooks. Some of the top names in the sports betting industry are operating in the Evergreen State.

There are several locations in Washington where you can place bets in person.

Washington sports leagues & teams to bet on

Seattle, Washington was once the proud home of the Seattle SuperSonics, who were crowned NBA champions in 1979. However, the franchise relocated to Oklahoma City and rebranded as the Thunder following the 2007-08 season.

Despite the absence of an NBA team in Washington, locals can still root for their home teams in the other major sports leagues – the Seattle Seahawks (NFL), the Seattle Kraken (NHL), and the Seattle Mariners (MLB). Notably, the Seahawks emerged victorious in the Super Bowl in 2013.

The state is home to a variety of professional and semi-professional teams, including the Seattle Storm, a WNBA team with four championship wins, most recently in 2020. Additionally, there are numerous college teams such as the Seattle Redhawks, Washington Huskies, Gonzaga Bulldogs, and Washington State Cougars.

Seattle Seahawks

If Washington allows for multiple mobile sportsbooks, Lumen Field could become a hot spot for sports betting operators. With over 70,000 seats and being a popular year-round venue for the Seahawks, sportsbooks have ample incentive to pursue a partnership with the NFL franchise.

Seattle Mariners ⚾

Could the Mariners be inspired by the Washington Nationals and partner with a retail sports betting venue like BetMGM Underscoreg? T-Mobile Park’s recent rebranding could make it an attractive location for sports betting partnerships.

Seattle Kraken

When the time is right for major professional sports teams to form sports betting partnerships, the Kraken are leading the pack. Their home base at the cutting-edge Climate Pledge Arena boasts cashier-less technology and an app that allows fans to purchase merchandise and have it conveniently delivered to an in-arena pickup location.

Seattle Sounders ⚽

In Washington, the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer stand out as another highly successful franchise. The soccer club consistently ranks among the top teams in the league, boasting two MLS Cup championships in 2016 and 2019. Additionally, they finished in second place in 2017 and 2020, placing them among the elite teams in the league with only the LA Galaxy and D.C. United holding more titles.

On March 25, 2020, Governor Jay Inslee signed HB 2638 into law, making sports betting legal in Washington. This regulation permits all federally recognized Native American tribes in the state to offer sports betting at their casino locations, as long as they amend their gambling compact to operate within the law.

Retail and online sports betting is allowed by law, but betting outside of tribal lands is prohibited. This means that online betting is only allowed within retail sportsbooks located in casinos on tribal land.

Although online sports betting sites and mobile apps are permitted, the limited availability of these options has caused the market to primarily center around brick-and-mortar locations. Only a handful of casinos and sportsbooks provide betting apps as a supplement to their retail services.

College sports betting

Almost any sport can be bet on and any type of wager can be placed by bettors, with the exception of in-state college teams and minor league games.

The law is currently under dispute as Maverick Gaming, a Kirkland-based casino company, filed a lawsuit in January 2022 to challenge the compact between tribal casinos and the state of Washington. They argue that the tribes’ monopoly on sports betting and other forms of gambling is unlawful.

Maverick’s initial legal battle ended in defeat when the lawsuit was dismissed by the court. The outcome of this challenge, as well as potential future ones, has the potential to revolutionize the sports betting market.

Who can bet on sports in Washington?

Despite the legality of sports betting in Washington, there are still certain restrictions that individuals should be aware of.

Legal age

In order to legally bet on sports in Washington, you need to be at least 21 years old and physically present on tribal lands.

Mobile betting

In Washington, mobile betting is allowed only on tribal lands. Some retail sportsbooks in the state offer betting apps that can be used on-site at their physical locations. Despite being called “mobile betting,” it still requires a trip to a casino to place bets using your smartphone in Washington.

Remote registration

In Washington, registering for both offline and online sports betting services requires a visit to a tribal casino that offers sports betting. Remote sign-up is not permitted, and registration usually involves obtaining a player’s card or other complimentary membership from the casino.

Within state borders

In the majority of states, online gambling laws require individuals to be physically present within state boundaries in order to place a bet. Washington, however, goes a step beyond by mandating that individuals must be inside a tribal casino (located on tribal land) in order to place any type of sports wager, whether it be through a mobile device or otherwise.

Retail sportsbooks

In Washington, retail sportsbooks are only permitted within tribal casinos, of which there are currently 17 in the state that offer dedicated sports betting facilities.

Taxable winnings

There is no state gambling tax in Washington, but federal taxes must be paid on any winnings. A 25% withholding tax is typically applied to significant wins.

What you can and can’t bet on in Washington

Besides remote sports betting, other forms of betting are also prohibited in Washington.

Politics ❌

In the United States, including Washington, it is always illegal to bet on political events such as the midterms or presidential elections.

Entertainment awards ❌

Betting on celebrity events and entertainment award ceremonies such as the Oscars, Emmys, or Grammys is prohibited by law in the United States.

Daily Fantasy Sports ❌

Washington law prohibits daily fantasy sports (DFS) due to its classification as a game of chance, making it illegal in the state. As a result, there are currently no DFS providers operating within Washington.

Surprisingly, many states have viewed fantasy sports as a game of skill for a long time, making DFS legal well before the Supreme Court overturned PASPA in 2018. This is how popular online sports gambling platforms like DraftKings and FanDuel first emerged.

What about esports and WA college sports? ✅

Betting on esports is allowed, but can only be done through retail sportsbooks or their apps. College sports betting is also permitted, but bets cannot be placed on in-state college teams or events, only on those outside of Washington.

Supporters of Washington’s tribal casinos, who advocate for them to be the sole providers of sports wagering, are in disagreement with those who want to see sports betting allowed throughout the entire state, as seen in other states that have already legalized it.

The law does not favor the latter group, as challenges to the existing gaming compacts between the state and 15 tribes have not resulted in any changes in their favor.

Let’s take a glimpse into the sports betting history of Washington.

2020: Inslee Signs Bill Into Law

In March, Governor Jay Inslee officially approved the legalization of in-person and mobile sports betting in Washington. This move made Washington the first state in 2020 to become part of the legalized sports wagering community in the United States.

Although the bill was considered a major win for the state’s tribal casinos, the process was lengthy. Throughout the year, there was minimal advancement on new sports betting compacts due to the government’s prioritization of urgent pandemic-related issues.

2021: Tribes Clash With Gaming CEO

The turning of the calendar brought some advancements in Washington’s efforts to establish legal sports betting, but it was not without obstacles.

Eric Persson, CEO of Maverick Gaming, urged the state to broaden its sports betting legislation to encompass card rooms and racetracks licensed in Washington, allowing for widespread mobile sports wagering. The proposed bill SB5212 included a 10 percent tax on gaming revenue and a $100,000 license fee.

The tribes were strongly opposed. Rebecca George, Executive Director of the Washington Indian Gaming Association, not only disputed Maverick’s claim that card rooms could generate $50 million in tax revenue from sports betting each year, but also argued that allowing mobile sports betting off tribal lands would restrict the amount of money the tribes could contribute to their less affluent communities.

Despite no changes to the law, Inslee signed 15 tribal sports betting compacts in July 2021. Two months later, the Snoqualmie Tribe became the first in Washington to accept retail sports bets, followed by becoming the first tribe to offer mobile betting before the end of the year.

2022: Maverick Files Lawsuit Against State

After several more Washington tribes introduced retail sports betting, Maverick filed a lawsuit alleging that the state had acted illegally by granting exclusive sports wagering rights to the tribes.

The lawsuit extended into 2023 before being dismissed, but further legal hurdles to the tribe’s monopoly are expected to persist. In the meantime, tribal casinos have been increasing their sports betting offerings, partnering with DraftKings, FanDuel, and Caesars in early 2022.

Responsible sports betting in Washington

Washington is dedicated to promoting responsible gambling by providing a variety of resources and helplines that are accessible 24/7. The Washington State Gambling Commission oversees these efforts and offers confidential assistance through a toll-free phone line or online chat service.

Washington offers a state-wide self-exclusion program for card rooms, non-tribal casinos, and participating tribal casinos.

The National Council on Problem Gambling is available to offer assistance as well.

Underscoregs to avoid in Washington

There are many online sportsbooks that claim to cater to Washington residents, but it is important to note that only those located on tribal lands are legal.

These offshore sportsbooks do not have the necessary licenses to operate legally in the state, raising concerns about their safety and legitimacy. If you encounter any issues while using one of these sites, you may not have the protection of a regulatory body to safeguard your interests.

Growth of sports betting 📈

The repeal of PASPA by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 led to a significant increase in legal sports betting across the United States. Nearly thirty states have now legalized various forms of sports betting, with many implementing laws that allow for online sportsbooks and mobile betting apps to be licensed. For more information on the status of legal sports betting in a specific state, refer to our sports betting tracker.

In the last two years, Ohio and Massachusetts have seen tremendous success with their online betting launches. This has provided sports fans with an additional way to connect with their favorite teams, while also generating vital revenue for the states through licensing fees and taxes.

On March 11, 2024, legal sports betting made its debut in North Carolina, welcoming eight top sportsbooks to the Tar Heel state. As events such as the Copa America and Euro 2024 soccer tournaments unfold throughout the summer, the excitement and possibilities for sports betting fans are on the rise.
