How Much is a Half-Point Worth?

Many sports betting sites offer the option to purchase half-points from a point spread for a small fee. For example, if the Minnesota Vikings are favored by -5 points against the Pittsburgh Steelers at -110 odds, you could buy a half-point and bet on Minnesota -5.5 at -120 odds, or sell another half-point and bet on Minnesota -6 at -130 odds. While this strategy can increase your chances of winning, it also lowers the potential profit you could make. For instance, if you bet on Minnesota -5 and they win by exactly 5 points, it’s a push and you get your stake back. But if you had bet on Minnesota -5.5, you would have made a profit. However, if the Vikings won by 6 points, your profit would be reduced due to buying the half-point. It’s important to find the right balance when using this tool to maximize your potential profit. It can help you analyze the impact on the favorite and underdog by buying or selling points, allowing you to determine the value of doing so.

Advantages of Using This Half-Point Calculator

This calculator streamlines the process of determining whether to buy or sell half a point, or multiple half-points, on various sports such as NBA, NFL, NCAA basketball, NCAA football, and MLB (totals only). It provides the fair value for these purchases and sales quickly and efficiently. Many experienced handicappers utilize this strategy to increase their profits throughout the season, but it can be complex and time-consuming. Using it incorrectly can lead to disastrous results, which is why this calculator simplifies the process and helps you make well-informed decisions. You have the option to choose between American odds or decimal odds. This advanced half-point calculator is the most useful tool available, as it calculates the edge on each outcome and the probability of a push in a clear and easy-to-understand manner.

How to Use a Half-Point Calculator

Please adhere to these steps when utilizing this calculator:

Please select the league you would like to place a bet on: NFL, NBA, college basketball, college football, or MLB totals.

2. Please select the type of bet you would like to place (spread or total).

3. Select the type of odds (US or decimal).

4. Input the spread or total. For instance, for a 5-point spread, enter “5” and for a 238.5-point total, enter “238.5”. If it is a pick-em, enter 0.5. If you are wagering on the spread, enter the odds for the favorite to cover it in the Fave Price box. If you are betting on totals, enter the odds for over.

If you are wagering on the spread, input the odds for the underdog to cover in the Dog Price box. If you are betting on totals, input the odds for the under.

6. After clicking “Calculate”, a wealth of statistical information will be displayed below. There are a total of seven rows, with the middle row showing the actual spread or total line entered into the calculator. The rows above and below demonstrate the effects of adjusting the spread in either direction.

An Example

Imagine Tampa Bay facing off against Carolina in a significant NFL matchup. The point spread is set at 2.5 points. One sportsbook may have Carolina at +102 with a -2.5 point spread, while Tampa Bay is at -110 with a +2.5 point spread. In this scenario, you would place the following bet:

• League: NFL

• Bet Type: Spread

• Odds Type: US

• Spread: 2.5

• Fave Price: +102

• Dog Price: -110

Click “Calculate” to see the midpoint displayed in the middle row, showing the information you inputted. This point represents the halfway mark where the line meets in the middle. The row above will show the payout odds for Carolina if you purchase a half point, changing the spread to Carolina +2. The favorite price will be -102, indicating the advantage Carolina has at that price. To adjust the spread by another half point, check the row above for a 1.5-point spread. If you want to adjust the spread in the opposite direction, look below the midpoint for options like -3, -3.5, or -4 point spreads. Both adjustments will move the spread away from the midpoint.

This data aligns with the same value as the original payout odds. To purchase a half point on Tampa Bay, refer to the row below the middle row for all the necessary details (a +3 spread instead of a +2.5 spread). If you wish to purchase two half points, you will see a +3.5 spread listed above that. Keep in mind that the accuracy of the calculator decreases as it moves further from the initial spread/total. You can view wider line movements by scrolling up or down, but we suggest sticking to a 1.5 point deviation for better precision.

Afterwards, you have the option to customize the bottom section of the calculator. For example, if a competing sportsbook you typically use is offering -110 odds on Carolina -2.5 and -110 odds on Tampa Bay +2.5, you can input different odds for various point spreads. For instance, you can input -110 in the Favorite Price field for a 2.5-point spread, -120 for a 2-point spread, -130 for a 1.5-point spread, and -140 for a 1-point spread. Similarly, you can input -110 in the Underdog Price field for a 2.5-point spread, -130 for a 3-point spread (typically costing $0.20 to move to a half-point on the 3 due to its common margin of victory), -150 for a 3.5-point spread, and -160 for a 4-point spread.

This will indicate the approximate edge for each example, guiding you on the best and worst bets to make when purchasing or selling half-points. It is ideal to seek the lowest possible edge. In this scenario, the top bets are Tampa Bay +3.5 and Tampa Bay +4, while the worst bets are Carolina -1.5 and Carolina -1.

When to Purchase Half Points

This page provides valuable information on the most strategic bets to make when adjusting spreads and totals in football betting. Understanding that 3-point and 7-point margins of victory are common in football, it is important to note that the push probabilities for these outcomes are 9.79% and 5.72%, respectively. Making small adjustments, such as moving a -3.5 spread bet to -2.5 for $0.50, can significantly impact your potential winnings. For example, moving from 9.5 to 10.5 or vice versa for $0.20, or adjusting from 13.5 to 14.5 for $0.20, can also be advantageous. Additionally, buying a single half-point for $0.25 to shift a spread market from -3 to -2.5, or from +3 to +3.5, can be a smart move. When the spread is set at 10, 14, or 17 points, it is recommended to buy a half-point for $0.10 to improve your odds. These strategic adjustments can give you a better edge in your football betting endeavors.
