The West Virginia Mountaineers are set to face off against the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Wednesday afternoon. The Mountaineers are considered strong favorites in the top college football odds. The weather at Bank of America Stadium is expected to be perfect, however, the state of the Tar Heels’ roster may not be. Check out our prediction for the 2026 Duke’s Mayo Bowl matchup between North Carolina and West Virginia.

Despite a strong start to the season, the North Carolina Tar Heels (8-4) faced two consecutive losses and several key players opting out before the bowl season. Despite this, they were still able to secure a spot in the 2026 Duke’s Mayo Bowl, where they will face off against the West Virginia Mountaineers (8-4) in one of four college football games scheduled for Wednesday.

The Tar Heels could benefit from a slight home-field advantage in Charlotte, but it’s unknown which team will show up after a disappointing end to the season. On the other hand, the Mountaineers ended 2026 strong and should be fully prepared for this game.

In our analysis of college bowl game odds, we present our top prediction for the North Carolina vs. West Virginia matchup in Wednesday’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl. Our college football picks are based on odds from reputable betting sites, with confidence levels rated on a 1-to-5-star scale.

Prediction for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl: North Carolina faces off against West Virginia.

West Virginia is favored by 6.5 points with odds of -110 at BetMGM, rated five stars.

If both teams were at full strength, this matchup would be much more exciting. Unfortunately, one team has been significantly weakened by transfers and opt-outs, a common occurrence during bowl season. As a result, this game has become one of my top five-star plays of the entire bowl season.

Drake Maye, the quarterback for North Carolina and a key player in the offense, is expected to be a top-two pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Unfortunately, he will not be playing on Wednesday. Additionally, star wide receiver Tez Walker, who has 699 yards, and linebacker Cedric Gray, who earned All-ACC honors with 121 tackles this season, will also be unavailable for the game.

The absence of those three players, along with others, leaves uncertainty about the performance of a team that was already showing signs of decline in the latter part of the season. Starting with a strong 6-0 record, the Tar Heels suffered unexpected losses in October and ended the year with two consecutive defeats, including a disappointing 39-20 loss to NC State. The team’s lack of effort and preparation in that game drew criticism.

On the other hand, the Mountaineers finished the year strong by winning four of their last five games and will have nearly all their players available for Wednesday’s game. This could lead to significant advantages for West Virginia against UNC’s vulnerable frontcourt.

At the end of the regular season, West Virginia had the third-highest rushing offense in the country, averaging 234.3 yards per game. The team had three players with over 700 rushing yards: quarterback Garrett Greene with 708 yards, and running backs CJ Donaldson with 798 yards and Jahiem White with 792 yards.

The trio of players are poised to have a strong performance against North Carolina, a team that struggled defensively, ranking 86th in rushing yards allowed and 95th in total defense even before losing their top tackler Gray. Additionally, they may have difficulty containing Devin Carter, a speedy receiver who previously played for NC State and had a standout game against UNC in 2026.

The betting market quickly jumped on West Virginia as a 3.5-point favorite, with the line moving three points in their favor. However, this shift may not be enough against a UNC team that has a poor bowl game record, losing six of their last seven games, and showing signs of quitting on their season weeks ago.
