The last major tournament of the season is upon us, as elite golfers face off at Royal Liverpool Golf Club starting on Thursday. Underscoreg Review’s betting analyst, Stewart Serena, examines the Open Championship props markets on our top sports betting apps and shares his top selections and predictions.

The Open Championship will return to Royal Liverpool Golf Club for the first time since 2014, with World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy listed as the top favorites in the British Open betting odds.

McIlroy, who was the wire-to-wire winner in 2014, is seeking his first major championship since winning the PGA Championship to end the 2014 major season. He is expected to be among the top picks for the British Open this week.

The tournament will not start until Thursday, July 20, but our top sportsbooks will be offering a plethora of Open Championship props markets in anticipation of the final major championship of the season.

Bet on Tony Finau to place in the top 20, with odds at +210 on FanDuel. ⭐⭐⭐

Finau’s odds are significantly low in betting markets this week due to his lackluster performance, with only one top-25 finish in six events since winning the Mexico Open in April.

He has excelled on links-style courses, boasting an impressive average of 2.07 strokes gained: total since 2014. When you combine this with his strong track record at the Open Championship and recent break from competition following a missed cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, I anticipate a resurgence in form and a birdie-filled performance from the six-time PGA Tour champion.

Finau has maintained a perfect record at the Open, never missing the cut, and has achieved four top-20 finishes in six appearances at the event.

There is a hidden discrepancy in the odds offered by our top sportsbooks. The odds of +210 provide an expected value that is 11% higher than the +180 odds offered through BetMGM. It is important to mention that BetMGM does pay out ties, unlike the other three highlighted sportsbooks.

There is value in betting on Louis Oosthuizen to place in the top 40, with odds of +145 on FanDuel. ⭐⭐

Choosing to back Oosthuizen for a top-40 result on FanDuel instead of betting on the +100 odds on DraftKings offers a notable advantage. The +145 number on FanDuel translates to a positive expected value of 23%, a rare opportunity in the world of golf betting.

Oosthuizen clinched his only major victory in the 2010 Open, and has finished in the top 40 in five out of nine editions since then.

His solo-fourth performance at the LIV London event earlier this month has given me great encouragement, especially since he has proven himself to be a skilled player on links tracks.

Top Scandinavian pick: Viktor Hovland is a +150 favorite through Caesars sportsbook. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

We won this bet during the U.S. Open when Hovland was the only Scandinavian to make it to the weekend, and he has finished in the top 20 in each of the last four major championships.

With Hovland’s exceptional ball-striking and continued improvement in his short game, he deserves to have lower odds in this prop market. He currently ranks eighth in true strokes gained: tee-to-green in this field over his last 57 measured rounds, and has shown no signs of giving away strokes with his short game in the past 20 rounds.

Without Dane Nicolai Hojgaard’s unexpected T-6 finish at the Genesis Scottish Open last week, Hovland would not have such a low price. Hojgaard’s performance was surprising, especially considering he had missed the cut in three of his last four starts.

Hole-in-one prop bets

The hole-in-one prop bet for the Open Championship offers a straightforward two-way market with odds of Yes -220 and No +165 on DraftKings.

Both DraftKings and BetMGM offer odds of +300 for a hole in one in each round, with DraftKings also offering a two-way market for Rounds 1 and 2 at -450 for No.

Wire-to-wire winner props

In golf, winning a tournament wire-to-wire indicates that the same player has maintained the lead throughout all four rounds of play. Throughout Open Championship history, there have been seven wire-to-wire winners and five other players who have shared the lead at the end of a round before ultimately winning the tournament.

The top choice to win the 2023 Open Championship, Rory McIlroy, led from start to finish when the Open Championship was last held at Royal Liverpool.

DraftKings and BetMGM are offering +1000 odds for a wire-to-wire winner, with DraftKings also providing prices for individual players.

Are there any playoff props?

At The Open Championship, a distinctive four-hole playoff format is used to determine the winner based on the lowest aggregate score. In the event of a tie after the four holes, a sudden-death playoff will determine the ultimate champion.

There have been 21 playoffs in Open Championship history, with the most recent one occurring in 2015. Zach Johnson emerged as the winner after beating Marc Leishman and Louis Oosthuizen in the playoff.

The playoff options for the 2023 Open Championship will consist of a two-way market, offering both Yes and No choices.

Nationality props

The Open Championship features a strong lineup of international players, making nationality prop markets a popular choice for bettors looking to wager on groups of players from various countries and regions across the globe.

FanDuel and PointsBet are both providing distinctive nationality betting options for the winner of the Open Championship.

Explanation of prop bets for the British Open

The top sports betting websites we recommend will feature a variety of Open Championship prop bets. These include betting on whether a certain golfer will make the cut, predicting notable moments during the tournament, wagering on the nationality of the winner, and speculating on the possibility of a playoff, among other choices.

It is important to consider that there is a vast array of options and odds available on our top live betting sites, so it is crucial to shop around for the best deals.

Tips for betting on props in the British Open

Every year, the Open Championship is defined by the challenges of links golf and facing the elements. However, Royal Liverpool may not prove to be the most difficult test for the top golfers in the world in 2023.

In 2014, Royal Liverpool was set up as a par-72 course measuring 7,312 yards. Rory McIlroy secured victory with a score of 271 (-17), while 10 other players also finished with double-digit scores under par.

The Royal Liverpool layout has been altered for the 2023 Open Championship, now scoring as a Par 71 and measuring 7,383 yards after extensive changes to the back nine. Despite these modifications, the weather is still anticipated to be the main challenge for players on the course.

If the conditions remain dry and calm, scores are expected to be low once more this year.
