Week 5 of the CFL season was filled with thrilling games that had a significant influence on the 2024 Grey Cup odds according to top sportsbooks in Canada.

The most impressive game of the week was the Montreal Alouettes’ thrilling comeback victory over the Calgary Stampeders. Despite facing a potential loss for the first time since Sept. 15, 2023, Montreal rallied behind quarterback Cody Fajardo and scored four consecutive times. The game was sealed with Walter Fletcher’s touchdown run in the final minute.

Despite Montreal narrowly maintaining their perfect record, the BC Lions showed their strength in a 44-28 victory against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Vernon Adams Jr., the frontrunner for the CFL Most Outstanding Player award, led the Lions in closing the distance between them and the Alouettes.

At the start of the week, the Toronto Argonauts had the third-lowest odds to win the Grey Cup on our top sports betting apps in Canada. However, an upset victory by the Saskatchewan Roughriders with their backup quarterback has caused a major shift in the odds.

Top contenders for the 2024 Grey Cup victory

Alouettes (+275)

Could Montreal possibly suffer a defeat at some stage? After a lackluster beginning against the Stampeders in Week 5 left them trailing 23-9 with less than a minute left in the second quarter, it seemed like they were destined for failure. However, Fajardo’s expertise proved pivotal, as a swift field goal just before halftime narrowed the deficit to 11 points.

In the latter part of the game, Jason Maas’ team showcased their strong defensive skills by shutting down the opposing offenses, allowing Tyson Philpot and Walter Fletcher to take charge. Philpot impressively gained 134 receiving yards on 12 catches against his brother’s team, making him a strong contender for the title of Most Outstanding Canadian. Meanwhile, Fletcher displayed his versatility by accumulating a total of 160 yards from scrimmage.

This team’s 13-game winning streak dating back to last season is exemplified by their flawless performance. Fajardo excels in Maas’ offense with his composure and precision, the playmakers exhibit exceptional talent, and Thorpe’s defense is relentless.

Montreal ranks second in the CFL for both yards (405.8) and points per game (32), while leading in yards allowed (336) and points allowed per game (19.8). They are the most well-rounded team in the league, but have not faced the Lions or Riders yet this season.

I believe that the Als are the top team in the CFL, but even if you bet $10 on them to win, you’ll only make a $27.50 profit. If you want to bet on the Alouettes to win again, make sure to take advantage of our Canada sportsbook promotions to get the best price.

Lions (+300)

Should we disregard the Lions’ opening season defeat to the Argos? Their offense is top-notch and Adams is performing so well that he could possibly play in the NFL.

Rick Campbell’s team had an easy time in Week 5, with Adams leading two scoring drives in the first six minutes. By halftime, the CFL Most Outstanding Player favorite had already thrown for over 320 yards and four touchdowns. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats may be the worst team in the league, but Adams’ performance was truly exceptional.

Remember, the Lions are achieving this feat without All-Star wide receiver Keon Hatcher, who is expected to return soon. In his stead, Justin McInnis and Alexander Hollins have become the most formidable duo in the league, amassing 260 yards and three touchdowns against Hamilton.

Despite some concerns about the defense, Adams is currently leading the league in QB rating (121.7), passing yards (1,752), and TDs (11), while Hollins is leading in receiving yards (573) and McInnis is in third place (482). Surprisingly, running back William Stanback is also leading the league in rushing yards (311).

Although the Lions lead the CFL in yards per game (441.4) and passing yards per game (350.4), and are ranked third in points per game (29.4), I would hold off on placing a bet until the odds lengthen. Following their most impressive performance of the year, the odds for BC are the shortest we have seen, with a $10 winning bet resulting in a $30 profit.

Roughriders (+500)

After defeating the Argos 30-23 as underdogs, the Roughriders are finally earning the respect they deserve. With a 4-0 record, Saskatchewan is the only undefeated team in the West, but they still trail behind BC for a good reason. QB Trevor Harris is sidelined for the foreseeable future.

Assessing the Riders’ potential without Harris, who is sidelined with a knee injury, is challenging. However, backup Shea Patterson demonstrated in the game against Toronto that he is capable of holding the team together until the 38-year-old Harris recovers.

Although Patterson did not perform like the next Darian Durant during his first CFL start, the former Michigan Wolverine showed quick decision-making and avoided turnovers. Saskatchewan relied on Samuel Emilus and Kian Schaffer-Baker to make plays for their quarterback, while also utilizing A.J. Ouellette and the running game to keep the offense simple.

Even more significant is the strong defensive performance by the new Riders head coach Corey Mace against his former team. The defense put pressure on Cameron Dukes, resulting in four interceptions. Saskatchewan currently ranks third in the CFL for fewest yards allowed (359) and points per game (23.5).

Despite Saskatchewan’s offense leading the league in points per game (32), I have doubts about its sustainability with Patterson in charge. The upcoming game against the Lions could potentially impact the odds significantly. Currently, a $10 bet could earn a $50 profit.

The Grey Cup team I’m keeping an eye on

Argonauts (+750)

To clarify, I was unimpressed by the Argos’ Week 5 performance and felt they were not deserving of being 3.5-point favorites against the Roughriders at Mosaic Stadium. There was clearly an overreaction to their early season success against the Lions and Elks.

In the last two games against the Alouettes and Riders, he has thrown five interceptions and zero touchdowns. Despite this, I have more trust in the Argos than any team outside of the top three. Can we really be confident in Patterson starting for the Riders?

I don’t have a strong opinion about the Argos, but this price seems like a good bet, especially if Dukes can lead the team to the playoffs until Chad Kelly returns from suspension. It’s also beneficial that Toronto has six games remaining against the Tiger-Cats, Elks, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who have a combined record of 1-13.

However, I believe it would be wise to hold off on placing a bet on the Argos for another week. Their upcoming away game against Montreal in Week 6 may result in another loss, causing the odds to potentially increase to +900. Currently, a $10 winning bet would yield a $75 profit at the current price.

Tips on placing bets on the Grey Cup

Placing bets on Grey Cup odds is simple. Start by selecting a reputable sportsbook that offers CFL futures. Check the odds for each team, such as +400 for the Toronto Argonauts and +600 for the Calgary Stampeders. If you bet $100 on the Argonauts and they win, you would receive $400 in winnings. Keep track of the teams’ performances to monitor the progress of your bet.

Future markets are primarily influenced by a team’s performance and how they are perceived. If a team exceeds or falls short of expectations, their odds will be adjusted accordingly. The occurrence of injuries to key players can have a significant impact on a team’s chances and subsequently their odds. Additionally, trades and new player acquisitions can also affect a team’s likelihood of winning the Grey Cup. Public betting trends play a crucial role in odds adjustments, with sportsbooks potentially altering the odds to mitigate their risk if a large number of people are betting on a particular team. Expert analysis and predictions can also sway betting behavior, thereby influencing odds. Understanding these various factors can help bettors make more informed decisions and potentially capitalize on favorable odds shifts.

Ways to interpret Grey Cup betting odds

Odds are usually shown as +400 or -150. When the odds are positive (e.g., +400), it means you would make a profit of $400 on a $100 bet. For example, a $100 bet at +400 odds would result in a total payout of $500. On the other hand, negative odds (e.g., -150) indicate the amount you need to bet to win $100. So, a $150 bet at -150 odds would win you $100, plus your $150 stake, for a total of $250.

The odds provided also give an indication of the likelihood of a team winning the Grey Cup. Lower odds (e.g., +200) imply a greater chance of winning, whereas higher odds (e.g., +800) suggest a lower likelihood. These odds are adjusted by factors such as team performance, injuries, trades, and betting trends.

If you were to bet on the Toronto Argonauts with +400 odds and the Calgary Stampeders with +600 odds, the Argonauts are seen as the more probable winner. By betting $100 on the Argonauts and if they were to win, you would receive $500 in return ($400 profit + $100 stake). Being able to comprehend these odds is crucial in making well-informed betting choices and gauging potential profits.
