Josef Newgarden emerged as the Indy 500 champion, solidifying his status as one of the top contenders at our top-rated sports betting sites.

Josef Newgarden had another heart-pounding experience at the Indy 500, but once again emerged victorious.

Newgarden engaged in multiple thrilling battles during the race, but the most memorable showdown was with Pato O’Ward in the closing laps. O’Ward managed to overtake Newgarden and appeared poised to secure his first Indy 500 victory as he took the lead on the final lap. However, the defending champion swiftly reclaimed the lead by passing O’Ward in the next two turns.

Newgarden joins a rare group of drivers by winning the Indy 500 in back-to-back years, becoming only the sixth driver to do so. He is the first to achieve this since Helio Castroneves did it in 2001-2002.

The Penske driver was listed as the second-favorite in the odds at our top sportsbooks, with Scott McLaughlin just slightly ahead. Take a look at the final odds for the 2024 race, as well as some background on the event and betting advice (odds provided by our top sports betting apps).

Which driver emerged victorious in the 2024 Indianapolis 500?

Josef Newgarden claimed victory in the 2024 Indy 500 by passing Pato O’Ward on the final lap, making him just the fourth driver ever to win the race with a last-lap maneuver. What is the reason behind the Indy 500 winner drinking milk?

The tradition began in 1933 when Louis Meyer, after winning his second Indy 500 race, asked for a glass of buttermilk. He repeated this act after his third win in 1936, and a photo captured him drinking from the milk bottle while holding up three fingers to represent his third victory.

A local dairy company, not realizing Meyer was drinking buttermilk, started offering a bottle of milk to the winners of future races. Milk has been given to the winners every year since, with the exception of 1947 to 1955.
