I am unsure how to interpret this Aces team. Despite losing four of five games in mid-June, they have now won five consecutive games by more than ten points. However, only one of those wins exceeded the expected point spread of -16.
The Mystics had a tough time breaking away from the Aces during their Saturday matchup. Washington held the lead up until late in the third quarter, but Las Vegas managed to secure an 88-77 victory. This game did not reach the total score, which has been the case in three of the Aces’ last four games and both of the Mystics’ last two games.
At the beginning of the season, Las Vegas struggled with their defense, but Becky Hammon’s team has shown improvement by limiting their opponents to 83 points or fewer in five consecutive games. During this stretch, they have the third-best defensive rating in the league at 95.3.
Washington’s offensive performance has improved in recent weeks, but I remain skeptical of the team’s overall trajectory. They are still without their top player, Brittney Sykes, due to a foot injury, and none of their players rank in the top 20 for scoring in the league.
