The Florida Panthers managed to defeat the Edmonton Oilers in the first game of the series despite their impressive performance. However, they will need to step up their game or rely on some good luck in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final. Here are our predictions for the Oilers vs. Panthers matchup based on the latest NHL odds.

Even though they outshot the Florida Panthers 32-18 and had an expected goals advantage of 5.61 to 1.88, the Edmonton Oilers were unable to find the back of the net in a 3-0 loss in Game 1. Connor McDavid suggested that the “hockey gods” balanced things out following their surprising Game 6 victory over the Dallas Stars.

Sergei Bobrovsky of the Panthers put on an impressive display in goal, establishing the team as strong contenders for Game 2 on home ice. With their win, the Panthers’ chances of winning the Stanley Cup have greatly increased. Game 2 will take place on Monday at 8 p.m. ET at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Fla.

Here are our NHL picks and Game 2 predictions to go along with our Oilers-Panthers prop picks.

Under 5.5 goals ⭐⭐⭐⭐

In Game 1, the visiting Oilers faced frustration as they bombarded Bobrovsky with 25 shots in the first two periods. By the end of 40 minutes, Bobrovsky had seen more shots than in three home games against the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference Final. The Oilers ended the game with 32 shots, the highest number faced by the Panthers at Amerant Bank Arena since Game 5 of the first round against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Bobrovsky, despite facing fewer shots than his counterpart, had to be outstanding all night to achieve an unexpected shutout. This performance propelled him to the front of the Conn Smythe odds, as it was his second shutout of the playoffs. The Panthers’ win in Game 1 also marked their eighth Under in the last nine games, with the only exception being the unusual afternoon game in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final, which the Rangers won 5-4 in overtime.

The Panthers’ typically dominant defense had trouble stopping the Oilers in Game 1, but I anticipate a stronger showing in Game 2 on Monday. The home team will likely put forth a more focused defensive effort to support their star goaltender and avoid a repeat of the previous game.

The Oilers, known for their powerful offense, have also demonstrated strong defensive skills throughout the playoffs. They have successfully killed 30 consecutive penalties, resulting in three consecutive low-scoring games and five out of the last seven. Despite the Panthers having the best defense in the playoffs, their offensive performance has been lacking, with only one game out of their last nine where they scored more than two goals.

Game 2 key players

Sergei BobrovskyStuart Skinner
5.61 goals saved above expected in Game 1-0.5 goals saved above expected in Game 1
2 shutouts in playoffs Allowed 2 or fewer goals in four straight
Allowed 2 of fewer goals in 10 of the last 11 games1.84 goals-against average and .916 save percentage in last nine games

The goaltending duel in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final was expected, with Bobrovsky shining and Skinner falling short with timely saves his team needed, especially in the early stages of the game.

Skinner needs to replicate his standout performance against the Dallas Stars in Game 6, where he propelled the Oilers to their first Stanley Cup Final appearance since 2006. Although it’s unrealistic to expect him to perform at that level every game, he must consistently end each game with a positive goals saved above expected in order for the Oilers to have a shot at upsetting the Panthers, despite their strong offensive abilities.

In Game 2, the Under is looking strong once more. Bobrovsky is proving to be unbeatable down low and is showcasing the best performance of his 14-year career. The Panthers’ top player has yet to let a goal slip through the five-hole, putting pressure on the Oilers to aim high and shoot frequently.
