As Euro 2024 approaches, we believe it’s a great opportunity to highlight three top sleeper picks for the highly anticipated event, according to the odds from our top soccer betting sites.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the highly anticipated event was when Greece emerged as the champions of Euro 2004. Despite being considered major underdogs at the start of the tournament, they managed to defeat Portugal twice, including in the final, and also overcame France in the quarterfinals on their way to securing their first and only major title.

Taking into account a range of factors such as their odds for Euro 2024 and our predictions for how the tournament bracket will unfold, we have identified three underdogs who have a strong chance of achieving a significant win at the upcoming event in Germany, scheduled for June 14 to July 14.

England, France, and Germany are currently leading the odds, but Italy, the Netherlands, and Denmark, although lower down the odds ranking, present great value and have the potential to make a strong performance with some luck on their side.

Backing long shots for Euro 2024.

Netherlands

The Netherlands secured their only European Championship victory in 1988 by defeating the Soviet Union 2-0 in the final. Although they have not reached the semifinals since 2004, there is optimism for their performance at Euro 2024.

The Netherlands boasts one of the tournament’s most talented and seasoned defensive lineups. The Dutch defense is stacked with top European players, including Nathan Ake, Matthijs de Ligt, Stefan de Vrij, Micky van de Ven, and Virgil van Dijk.

If the Netherlands secure second place in Group D, which includes Austria, France, and Poland, they are likely to face Slovakia, Ukraine, or Romania in the Round of 16. A potential quarterfinal match could see them up against Portugal, Turkey, or the Czech Republic. The Netherlands are confident in their ability to compete against any of these teams, including Portugal.

If they make it to the semifinals, anything is possible. Holland’s main worry is their lack of scoring ability, but with their strong defensive lineup, they may not need to score many goals.

If you were to place a $10 bet with Caesars at +1800 odds, there is a 5.26% probability that the Netherlands will win their second European Championship trophy, resulting in a profit of $180.

Italy

The Italian national team, despite being the defending Euro champions, are entering the tournament with minimal expectations. They came in second during qualification, trailing behind England, and have only nine players from the 2020 winning team on their Euro 2024 roster.

Nevertheless, it would be unwise to underestimate the Italians in any major tournament, particularly with their head coach, Luciano Spalletti, who played a crucial role in Napoli’s recent Serie A victory. If Italy gains momentum heading into the knockout stage, they could potentially replicate their successful run at Euro 2020.

Italy is expected to come in second place in Group B, which is considered the toughest group in the tournament. The group includes Spain, Croatia, and Albania. Despite a tough challenge from Croatia, Italy should secure the second spot. This would likely lead to a Round of 16 match against Scotland, Hungary, or Switzerland. A potential quarterfinal against England could follow, with memories of England’s defeat in Euro 2020. The odds at Caesars are +1800, the same as Holland’s, for a potential total payout of $190 on a $10 bet.

Denmark

Denmark has the potential to surprise with their strong performance, especially with a favorable draw that could work in their favor if they play as well as expected.

In Group C, the Danes are expected to secure a spot in the knockout stage in second place, alongside Slovenia, England, and Serbia. With a strong defense led by Joachim Andersen, Andreas Christensen, Simon Kjær, and Joakim Mæhle, and skilled midfielders like Pierre Hojbjerg and Christian Eriksen, they have the potential to go far in the tournament. Additionally, with promising striker Rasmus Højlund eager to showcase his talents on the global stage, Denmark has a well-rounded and determined team.

If Denmark finishes in second place in Group C, they are likely to face a tough opponent in Germany in the Round of 16. However, if they are able to pull off an upset against the hosts and third favorites, they could potentially face Portugal or the Netherlands in the quarterfinals. Denmark would have a better chance against the Netherlands.

With odds of +5500, it’s worth considering placing a small bet on Denmark. The implied probability is 1.79%, so a $10 bet could result in a profit of $550 if Denmark wins their second European Championship.
