We acknowledge that racing on the IMS road course may not have the same appeal as NASCAR racing at “The Brickyard,” but it seems that a return to the oval is likely next season. I am hopeful for this change. In the meantime, fans can look forward to a race that includes road course experts from around the world competing alongside the regular Cup Series drivers.

Tyler Reddick dominated the competition to claim victory in the Verizon 200 last year. Securing a front-row starting position in qualifying, it comes as no surprise that he is now the top pick to once again take the checkered flag.

Several drivers are surrounding Reddick at the front of the starting grid, all hoping for a win to secure a spot in the playoffs. The victor will also have the chance to kiss the bricks.

Verizon 200 predictions

Outright winner: Tyler Reddick (+350 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐

Selecting the favorite may seem mundane, but it’s hard to overlook Reddick’s impressive performance at this race last year and his success at other technical road courses. Since the introduction of the Next Gen Car, he has proven to be the top contender at road courses.

Reddick has achieved victory at both Road America and Circuit of the Americas, in addition to winning the 2022 Verizon 200. In a total of 17 road races since the 2020 season, he has earned three wins, five top-5 finishes, and 10 top-10 finishes. With an average driver rating of 94.8, he ranks third among current competitors in this category.

When it comes to average driver rating, Reddick stood out at Indy last year by leading all Cup Series drivers with a 110.7 rating across the two previous races. To add more context to this remarkable achievement, remember that he only finished 21st in the first IMS Road Course race two years ago.

After Reddick’s impressive win at COTA and securing a front-row starting spot, any doubts about his ability to succeed with 23XI Racing have been dispelled. The No. 45 car is expected to be a strong contender, with FanDuel offering favorable +350 odds on Reddick to win.

Driver matchup: A.J. Allmendinger (+150 via SuperBook) vs. Christopher Bell ⭐⭐⭐

Once considered a far-fetched idea, a positive return on A.J. Allmendinger in a driver matchup at a road course is now a reality. Despite starting 26th on the grid for the Verizon 200 after a disappointing qualifying session, we are confident in backing him as a +150 underdog against Christopher Bell.

This is not a bet against Bell, who has also won recent road course races against NASCAR Cup Series competition. It is just a response to what appears to be an overreaction by oddsmakers due to Allmendinger’s disappointing qualifying performance.

Allmendinger claimed victory in the first edition of this race two years ago and placed seventh in the following year. Despite only competing in a limited number of Cup Series races before this season, he has achieved four top-5 finishes and eight top-10 finishes in just 13 road course races dating back to the 2020 season.

While Bell’s fading performance is not the main focus of this analysis, it is worth mentioning that he finished 12th and 36th in the last two road races at IMS. Despite starting 19 spots behind Bell, Allmendinger is known for his ability to make up ground on the track. His current position in the playoff cutline battle adds even more urgency to our decision to pick him.

Top 5 finish: Chase Elliott (+100 via bet365) ⭐⭐⭐

Chase Elliott is currently in the playoff mix with just three regular-season races left. After a disappointing crash at Michigan, the No. 9 team’s only option is to secure a victory to secure a spot in the 16-team playoff. Elliott’s strong performance on road courses in the past makes this weekend’s race at Indy a promising opportunity for that much-needed win.

Elliott has dominated the road races in the Cup Series since the beginning of the 2020 season. With four wins and 11 top-5 finishes in 16 starts, his stats are unparalleled. His average finish of 6.5 and driver rating of 115.1 far surpass all other drivers in that time period.

Elliott was unable to race at COTA this spring due to his injury, but he has proven to be a skilled road racer with a fifth-place finish at Sonoma and a third-place finish in Chicago.

Furthermore, Elliott has already made significant progress towards achieving another top-5 finish by recording the third-quickest qualifying time on Saturday. Given his strong starting position, some may argue that betting on a top-5 placement is a cautious choice. Nevertheless, with bet365 offering odds of +100 on this proposition, it remains a lucrative opportunity.
