The New Jersey Devils will be on the road to take on the Washington Capitals in their first game of 2024 on Wednesday. We have you covered with our top player props for the Devils vs. Capitals NHL matchup, based on the most favorable NHL odds.

Following a challenging end to 2023, the New Jersey Devils (19-14-2) embarked on a road trip on Wednesday to take on the Washington Capitals (18-11-6) in a showdown between two average teams in the Metropolitan Conference. This game was one of only two NHL matchups scheduled for the day.

After a three-game winning streak in late December, the Devils suffered a 5-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Dec. 30, marking the end of their 2023 calendar year. In contrast, the Capitals broke a four-game losing streak by defeating the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in their first game of 2024. The Capitals will now face off against the Devils as they begin a five-game homestand over the next 10 days.

Below are our top player props and picks for the Devils vs. Capitals NHL game, with odds provided by our recommended NHL betting sites. Confidence in each pick is rated on a scale of 1 to 5 stars.

Devils vs. Capitals NHL player props

Nico Hischier Over 0.5 power-play points (+270 via bet365) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I believe the Devils’ top-ranked power play, led by captain Nico Hischier, will be a key factor in this tilt.

Although Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt have dominated in power-play points for New Jersey this season, their odds reflect their performance. Hughes is listed at +135, while Bratt is at +185.

Recently, Hischier has been more involved in the Devils’ power play, earning three man-advantage points in his last eight games. This includes his third power-play goal of the season against the Bruins in their most recent game.

The Washington Capitals’ penalty kill has ranked 15th in the NHL since Thanksgiving, with a success rate of 80.3%. This presents a good opportunity for the potent New Jersey power play to capitalize and score at least one, if not two goals against a fatigued Washington team. This increases the likelihood of Hischier exceeding his scoring expectations.

The prop is priced at +270 on both DraftKings and bet365, which is higher than the +260 offered by FanDuel.

Evgeny Kuznetsov Under 0.5 points (-122 via BetRivers) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I distributed this same prop on Tuesday evening, and it succeeded at -145. I will confidently return to the same prop at an even more favorable price.

Currently, Evgeny Kuznetsov is struggling with a 10-game streak without scoring a point. His ice time has decreased significantly from 20:51 in November to 17:05 in December, and he is only averaging one shot on goal per game over the past 12 games. In his January debut, Kuznetsov played over 20 minutes on Tuesday but only managed to get two shots on goal and did not record a point.

The movement of the Under line may be attributed to the Devils ranking 28th in goals allowed per game this season, but it seems that the books are not taking into account the fatigue the Caps may experience after playing in Pittsburgh last night.

BetRivers offers the most competitive price compared to our top sports betting apps for those looking to bet against Kuznetsov, with DraftKings following closely behind at -135.

Tom Wilson Under 2.5 shots on goal (-143 via BetRivers) ⭐⭐⭐

The Capitals, including Tom Wilson, have been experiencing difficulties in creating scoring opportunities this season. As Wilson’s shot production decreases, oddsmakers are considering lowering the line to 1.5. It may be a good idea to bet on the Under 2.5 now before the odds become unfavorable.

Wilson, with 99 shots this year, has fallen short of this mark in four consecutive games and six of his last eight. Although he trails only Alex Ovechkin for the Capitals team lead in shots, he has failed to reach 2.5 in 20 out of 35 games this season. Wilson’s performance has been inconsistent, with many recent games falling into the “famine” category.

Even with their struggles in goal, the Devils have managed to rank eighth in the NHL for shot prevention overall and sixth since Thanksgiving. It seems unlikely that Wilson will be able to break out of his slump in this particular situation.

In terms of the best sports betting sites, BetRivers is leading by a significant margin, followed closely by FanDuel at -164.
