NBA All-Star Skills predictions

Skills challenge pick: Team Top Picks (+140 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

In the past two years, the NBA skills challenge has seen a change in format, resulting in hometown teams taking the victory. Team Cavs emerged victorious in 2022, while Team Jazz claimed the title in 2023.

This year, Team Pacers (comprised of Haliburton, Bennedict Mathurin, and Myles Turner) is set to break their underdog streak at the top sports betting sites. The real value lies in betting on the favorite trio of former No. 1 picks: Paolo Banchero, Anthony Edwards, and Victor Wembanyama.

DraftKings and FanDuel are both offering Team Top Picks at +140, while BetMGM has them at +125. The combination of size, athleticism, and movement skills of these three players sets them apart from the competition. The Team All-Stars, consisting of Scottie Barnes, Tyrese Maxey, and Trae Young, are the top competitors with DraftKings offering odds at +160 and FanDuel at +180.

Team Top Picks’ standout feature is Wemby’s exceptional shooting and ball-handling skills. In relay and shooting competitions, big men often struggle, but the rookie phenom stands out as one of the most talented big men in the game. Edwards is considered the top athlete in the competition, while Banchero excels in both passing and shooting, making him a well-rounded player.

3-point contest pick: Tyrese Haliburton (+550 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐

The 3-point contest this year is up for grabs, despite Damian Lillard making a return after winning last season. The last back-to-back 3-point champion was Jason Kapono in 2007-08, but it seems unlikely that Lillard will repeat as the winner, even though he is the favorite.

Lillard is listed at +475 on DraftKings, +370 on FanDuel, and +360 on BetMGM, but the most interesting choices are Haliburton from Indiana and Lillard’s teammate Malik Beasley from the Milwaukee Bucks. Beasley has the highest 3-point percentage this season among all players in the competition (44.9%), but Haliburton has the advantage.

The only player in this year’s competition shooting at least 7.5 three-pointers per game and making at least 40% of them is the two-time All-Star. Lillard is considered the favorite, but Haliburton is close behind in the rankings at our top sports betting apps. However, DraftKings offers the best value with Haliburton’s +550 line surpassing FanDuel’s (+440) and BetMGM’s (+500).

Slam dunk contest pick: Jaime Jaquez Jr. (+800 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐

The dunk contest is the highlight of NBA All-Star Weekend, and this year promises to be especially exciting with the potential for some unexpected surprises.

Predicting the winner of the dunk contest is a challenge, especially with Mac McClung as the reigning champion. The odds are in his favor, with sportsbooks listing him as a strong favorite at -170 to -222 leading up to the event.

Taking the G-Leaguer to win consecutive titles is almost worthless, as the last time it happened was in 2015-16 with Zach LaVine. The Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown and New York Knicks’ Jacob Toppin, whose brother Obi won in 2022, have the second-best chances.

With the dunk contest filled with uncertainty, it may not be wise to place a bet on a strong favorite like McClung. Instead, keep an eye on Miami Heat rookie Jaime Jaquez Jr., who could surprise as a dark horse contender.

He is only the fourth player in franchise history to win Rookie of the Month multiple times. Standing at 6-foot-6, the former UCLA Bruin boasts a wingspan of 6’9.5” and a vertical jump of 39 inches. With his impressive size and explosiveness, he is poised to make a big impact on the court and offers great value at BetMGM.

Despite being considered the biggest underdog at both DraftKings and FanDuel with odds of +550 and +650 respectively, BetMGM has him at an even more attractive +800, making it a bet that cannot be ignored.
