After winning the 2024 College Football Championship, the Michigan Wolverines named Sherrone Moore as their next head coach, as we analyze the top college football odds for filling the vacancy left by former coach Jim Harbaugh.

Despite facing obstacles, Jim Harbaugh led the Michigan Wolverines to their first college football championship since 1997, overcoming many challenges, some of which were self-inflicted.

Speculation on who would succeed Harbaugh as Michigan’s next head coach began circulating even before Harbaugh confirmed his new position with the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday. The rumors were put to rest on Friday when offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore, initially favored in early betting odds, was announced as Harbaugh’s replacement.

Favorite to be Michigan’s next head coach

Sherrone Moore (-700)

In 2023, Moore, aged 37, served as both the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Michigan. He initially joined the Wolverines in 2018 as the tight ends coach.

During Harbaugh’s suspensions last season, Moore stepped in as the program’s acting head coach and led the team to four wins, with Harbaugh officially credited for three of them. Moore’s standout unofficial win came in the final week of the regular season, a 30-24 victory over Ohio State.

This season, under Moore’s coaching, the Wolverines scored an average of 35.9 points and gained 382.7 yards per game.

Following Harbaugh’s departure, QB J.J. McCarthy and running back Blake Corum (along with other players) have announced their intentions to enter the 2024 NFL Draft. Keeping Moore as the head coach appears to be the wise decision for Michigan in order to maintain some level of consistency from their recent championship-winning season.

Michigan’s next head coach prediction

Moore is a strong contender for the Michigan job, but this could be a chance for the team to start fresh with a new coach and fully rebuild. While the odds of -700 (87.50% implied probability) may seem high, there is a possibility that Michigan could surprise everyone with their next coaching hire.

It is risky to invest at the moment in hopes of making a significant profit, so it may be wise to hold off until we have more information about potential candidates.
