Following the trade of center Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Utah Jazz seemed poised to shift their focus to building around guard Donovan Mitchell. However, discussions with the New York Knicks suggest that a potential deal involving Mitchell may also be on the table for the Jazz.

Mitchell, who will turn 26 before the next season, has maintained an average of over 20 points per game in all five of his NBA seasons. In the past two seasons, he has recorded impressive stats, including 26.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.3 steals per game, with shooting percentages of 44.4% from the field and 36.8% on three-pointers. While he is known as a top-scoring guard, his defensive abilities are sometimes questioned.

Mitchell’s contract spans three years and exceeds $97 million, including a player option for the 2025-2026 season valued at over $37 million.

New York Knicks (-200)

The Knicks are in a strong position to acquire Mitchell due to his ties to the New York Metropolitan area, particularly Elmsford. With a desire to add a star player to their roster, the Knicks may be willing to part with key players such as Obi Toppin, Cam Reddish, Immanuel Quickley, and Evan Fournier in exchange for Mitchell. However, they hope to retain R.J. Barrett in the deal. Despite their eagerness, the potential cost of four or five first-round draft picks gives the Knicks reason to pause, as it is a significant price to pay for a scoring guard with defensive concerns.

Miami Heat (+400)

The Heat have been keeping a close eye on top free agents like Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and Mitchell this summer. They are considering a potential trade involving Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson, along with other prospects and picks going to Utah. Miami is also in a good position to surround Mitchell with strong defensive players.

Utah Jazz (+550)

With Mitchell locked in for at least three more seasons, the Jazz hold significant bargaining power. They are not obligated to trade Mitchell at the moment, but publicized trade discussions often result in separations. If the Knicks or Heat do not increase their offers for Mitchell, the Jazz could choose to keep him as the centerpiece of their team and wait for better offers in the future.

Brooklyn Nets (+1000)

The Nets are facing a complex situation this offseason with potential trades involving Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. There is also uncertainty surrounding Ben Simmons’ future, with the possibility of him being included in a trade for Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz. If the Nets are looking to revamp their roster with a New York player in a leading role, there may be potential for a deal between the Jazz and Nets. However, the Nets would need to finalize some aspects of the Irving or Durant trades before moving forward with a potential trade for Mitchell.
