Pennsylvania Sportsbooks Post $858 Million January Handle

According to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board January report, sports betting activity in Pennsylvania remained strong through the best sports betting apps, continuing its momentum from the end of 2023 last month.

Although Pennsylvania sports betting apps fell below the $900 million monthly handle mark for the first time in three months, they, along with the state’s retail providers, experienced significant year-over-year increases in both handle and revenue figures.

In January, FanDuel Pennsylvania achieved two significant milestones in the world of sports betting in the Keystone State. The popular site crossed the $1 billion revenue mark and surpassed $10 billion in lifetime handle in Pennsylvania.

$858.1 million in total sports bets in January

Even with a reduced number of playoff games, NFL betting helped boost the Pennsylvania legal sports betting market and online betting platforms in January. Pennsylvania sportsbooks accepted a total of $858.1 million in bets last month, a 7.3% decrease from December’s almost $925.6 million, but an 11.1% increase from January 2023’s nearly $772.3 million.

Pennsylvania sports betting sites continued to dominate the market in the Keystone State, accounting for an impressive 94% of all sports bets placed in the state.

Revenues down slightly month-over-month but spike year-over-year

Pennsylvania sportsbooks had their second most successful month in terms of revenue in January, coming within 0.4% of December’s record of $98.098 million. These sportsbooks also offer Pennsylvania sportsbook promos.

The state’s gaming commission reported a gross revenue of $97.7 million, which is only 0.4% lower than December’s record haul. However, this shows a significant 68.5% increase from the revenue of just under $58 million reported in January 2023.

After accounting for promotions and bonuses, the adjusted gross revenue totaled $69.9 million. From this amount, $23.8 million in taxes was collected to support state and local coffers in need.

The win rate for January was a strong 11.4%, showing an increase from December’s 10.6%.

FanDuel on top

In January, FanDuel continued its winning streak as the top Pennsylvania sports betting app, surpassing $300 million in handle for the fifth consecutive month. FanDuel Pennsylvania led the state with a January handle of $373 million and generated the highest revenues among all Pennsylvania sports betting sites, totaling $55 million.

In January, DraftKings Pennsylvania saw a total of $210 million in accepted bets and generated $24 million in revenue, marking its second consecutive month of earning at least $24 million in profits.

In January, ESPN BET ranked third in the Pennsylvania market, with $74.9 million in accepted wagers. This equates to a 9.3% mobile market share, surpassing the company’s initial goal of achieving a 7% share within its first year of operation.

In January, BetMGM placed fourth in the Keystone State with $45.6 million in bets, while Ceasars came in fifth with $38.1 million.
