NBA All-Star Skills predictions

Skills challenge pick: Team Top Picks (+140 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The NBA skills challenge format was altered two years ago, resulting in the hometown trio winning the competition. In 2022, Team Cavs emerged victorious, followed by Team Jazz in 2023.

This year, the Team Pacers (Haliburton, Bennedict Mathurin, Myles Turner) are poised to end their streak as underdogs at top sports betting sites. The trio of former No. 1 picks, Paolo Banchero, Anthony Edwards, and Victor Wembanyama, are the favorites to bet on for success.

DraftKings and FanDuel are offering Team Top Picks at +140, while BetMGM has them at +125. The combination of size, athleticism, and movement skills sets these three apart from the competition. The toughest competition comes from Team All-Stars (Scottie Barnes, Tyrese Maxey, Trae Young), with DraftKings offering odds at +160 and FanDuel at +180.

Team Top Picks’ biggest advantage lies in Wemby’s exceptional shooting and ball-handling skills. While big men typically struggle in relay and shooting competitions, the rookie phenom is one of the most talented players of his size we’ve witnessed. Edwards is considered the top athlete in the competition, and Banchero excels in passing and shooting, making the team well-rounded.

3-point contest pick: Tyrese Haliburton (+550 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐

This year’s 3-point contest is wide open, despite Damian Lillard coming back as the defending champion. The last time someone won back-to-back titles was in 2007-08, when Jason Kapono of the Toronto Raptors did it. While Lillard may be the favorite, it’s doubtful he will be able to repeat as the winner.

DraftKings lists Lillard at +475, FanDuel at +370, and BetMGM at +360. However, the most enticing options are Indiana’s Haliburton and Lillard’s Bucks teammate Beasley. Beasley boasts the highest 3-point percentage this season among all participants at 44.9%, but the advantage ultimately goes to Haliburton.

The lone player in this year’s competition who is shooting a minimum of 7.5 three-pointers per game and making at least 40% of them is the two-time All-Star. Though Lillard is considered the frontrunner, Haliburton is closely trailing behind in the rankings of our top sports betting apps. However, DraftKings presents the most attractive value with Haliburton’s +550 line, which outshines FanDuel’s (+440) and BetMGM’s (+500) offerings.

Slam dunk contest pick: Jaime Jaquez Jr. (+800 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐

The dunk contest is the highlight of NBA All-Star Weekend, and this year promises to be an exciting and unpredictable event with great value.

Predicting who will win the title of best dunker is a challenging task, especially with Mac McClung, last year’s winner, in the mix. Our top sportsbooks are favoring the Osceola Magic guard, with odds ranging from -170 to -222 as the weekend approaches.

It is highly unlikely that a G-League player will be able to help a team win back-to-back titles, a feat that has only been achieved once since 2015-16 by Zach LaVine. The Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown and New York Knicks’ Jacob Toppin, whose brother Obi won in 2022, are the next favorites to accomplish this.

With so much unpredictability surrounding the dunk contest, it’s risky to bet on a heavy favorite like McClung. Especially considering the potential of Miami Heat rookie Jaime Jaquez Jr., who could be a dark horse contender.

He is only the fourth player in franchise history to win Rookie of the Month multiple times. Standing at 6-foot-6, the former UCLA Bruin boasts a 6’9.5” wingspan and a 39-inch vertical jump. With his size and explosiveness, he is poised to make a significant impact. Most importantly, he offers tremendous value at BetMGM.

Despite being considered the biggest underdog at DraftKings (+550) and FanDuel (+650), BetMGM has him at a remarkable +800, which is too enticing to ignore.
