According to the final NBA odds from top sports betting sites, Tyrese Maxey was the favorite to win the 2026 NBA Most Improved Player award, a prediction that came true when he ultimately claimed the title.

After the Philadelphia 76ers traded James Harden in late October, it appeared that Tyrese Maxey would benefit the most. He capitalized on the opportunity and quickly became the frontrunner in the 2026 NBA Most Improved Player odds, ultimately winning the award.

After Joel Embiid’s injury, the fourth-year guard led the Sixers by averaging 25.9 points and 6.2 assists throughout the season. He received his first All-Star selection and was expected to win the award by the end of the season, despite a late challenge from Chicago Bulls guard Coby White.

Maxey had been the frontrunner for months, holding the edge in odds since December. Despite White closing in on him towards the end, Maxey solidified his lead with a remarkable 54-point performance against the Spurs on April 7, essentially securing his victory in the race.

One year after being overshadowed by Embiid and Harden, Maxey ended the 2026-24 regular season ranked 12th in points per game (25.8), a significant improvement of over five points from the previous season. He received his first All-Star selection and played a crucial role in keeping Philadelphia competitive in the Eastern Conference playoff race following Embiid’s injury.

NBA Most Improved Player odds over time

Throughout most of the season, Maxey was consistently favored to win, with odds as low as -400 at one point. He stepped up as the leader for the 76ers after last year’s MVP winner was injured.

As the regular season entered its final two weeks, the competition between Coby White and Philadelphia’s breakout star tightened. Despite White’s impressive performance, Maxey’s exceptional box-score metrics and star quality as a lead guard ultimately set him apart in the race.
