The top 50 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings have qualified for this week’s BMW Championship. Our top picks are Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, who are once again the favorites according to the odds from our top golf betting sites.

After winning the Wyndham Championship and FedEx St. Jude Championship in consecutive weeks, Lucas Glover has surged back to No. 30 in the Official World Golf Ranking and is now fourth in the FedEx Cup standings. Despite his recent success, the 43-year-old is not considered a favorite by the BMW Championship odds as the tournament at Olympia Fields Country Club approaches.

Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, and Rory McIlroy are holding onto the top three positions in the FedEx Cup standings, giving them the best odds for success as they approach the second-to-last event of the 2022-23 PGA Tour season. The top 30 players in the season-long points race will move on to the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club, where McIlroy will be aiming for his second consecutive title.

Below are our top picks for the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club (odds sourced from our preferred sports betting apps).

BMW Championship picks

Hideki Matsuyama to win (+3500 via FanDuel, Caesars)

Matsuyama is currently ranked 34th in the Official World Golf Ranking and 47th in the FedEx Cup standings as he begins the BMW Championship. In order to secure his spot in the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club for the 10th consecutive season, he will need to deliver a strong performance this week.

I believe he has the ability.

Matsuyama finished in a tie for third place at the 2020 BMW Championship held at Olympia Fields Country Club. He is currently ranked sixth on the PGA Tour this season in birdie-or-better percentage from distances of 125 yards or less. Matsuyama’s putting improved in the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, while his iron play continued to be a strong suit from tee to green.

After struggling with his driver in recent games, he showed improvement with a final round of 5-under par and his putting skills, which had been lacking, improved in his latest match.

We’re finding excellent value in the odds provided by FanDuel and Caesars, while DraftKings is offering the lowest price on the market at +3000.

Corey Conners to finish top 10 (+330 via DraftKings, Caesars)

Conners recently placed T-6 in the FedEx St. Jude Championship, showcasing his strong averages of 0.59 strokes gained: off-the-tee and 0.83 SG: putting per round. These have been consistent strengths in his last 24 measured rounds, leading me to believe he will quickly recover from a disappointing week with his irons.

In 2020, the Canadian golfer finished tied for 33rd at Olympia Fields, despite struggling with a 1.95 strokes lost per round due to his putting. With his current strong form and expected improvement on the greens, I believe he has a good chance to significantly better his previous finish. Currently ranked 25th in the FedEx Cup standings, Conners will need a solid performance to maintain his position and secure a spot at East Lake for the Tour Championship.

In this market, DraftKings and Caesars have the top odds, while FanDuel offers slightly lower odds at +270.

BMW Championship field notes

Cameron Young, Hideki Matsuyama, Tom Hoge, Harris English, and Patrick Rodgers secured spots 46-50 in the FedEx Cup standings to qualify for the BMW Championship. They are among the players who must perform well this week to earn a spot at East Lake. Sam Burns is currently ranked 30th, with Sahith Theegala close behind at 31st.

After losing to Glover in a playoff last week in Memphis, TN, Patrick Cantlay will aim to secure his third consecutive BMW Championship victory. Meanwhile, Rahm, the 2020 BMW Championship winner, is focused on solidifying his position at the top of the FEC standings. He hopes to enter the Tour Championship with the pole position on the leaderboard at minus-10.

With points quadrupled for the second time this week, numerous competitors will be aiming to emulate Glover’s success and climb up the rankings.

The BMW Championship is returning to Olympia Fields CC for the first time since Rahm’s 2020 victory. Cantlay claimed victories at Caves Valley, MD in 2021 and Wilmington, DE in 2022. Rahm secured his win in a playoff against Dustin Johnson three years ago with a score of minus-4.

The North Course at Olympia Fields is a lengthy par-70 layout with narrow fairways. However, the rough and surrounding areas are forgiving for errant drives, placing more emphasis on driving distance rather than accuracy.

The primary defense of the course lies in its greens, which are typically elevated and of moderate size, making putting a challenge.

Three out of four of the par 3 holes are over 200 yards in length, and two out of three of the par 5 holes are longer than 600 yards. The most common range for par 4 holes is between 400 and 450 yards. Birdie opportunities are scarce, with par being the ideal score for most holes.
