The expansion of Maryland’s sports betting presence is rapidly increasing.

Less than three months after online sports betting was introduced in Maryland on November 23, 2022, the state welcomed its eighth mobile sportsbook, Betfred, on February 9. Betfred officially launched after a successful test run and obtaining a mobile sports wagering license from the Maryland Lottery And Gaming Control Commission.

Betfred recently launched its online sports betting platform in Maryland, with a successful demonstration of its mobile sportsbook. Customers were able to place live bets while Maryland Lottery and Gaming staff monitored to ensure compliance with regulations and proper system functionality.

In order to meet the licensing standards set by the Sports Wagering Review Commission (SWARC), all mobile sportsbooks in Maryland are required to partner with physical casinos. As a result, Betfred has partnered with Long Shot’s, an off-track betting facility located in Frederick, MD, for both its retail and online sports betting operations.

Betfred continues U.S. sports betting expansion

Betfred is proud to claim its position as one of the top sports betting sites globally. Established by the Done brothers in 1967 using winnings from England’s World Cup victory, this UK-based operator boasts an impressive 1,400 betting shops throughout the United Kingdom, ranking as the second-largest in the country. Additionally, Betfred has expanded its reach to Spain and Africa, with ongoing growth in the United States where it holds licenses in 10 states.

Right before Super Bowl 57, Betfred achieved a major victory in its quest to rival the top sportsbooks in the U.S. by obtaining its license from the Nevada Gaming Commission to enter the highly sought-after Nevada sports betting market. The company will collaborate with the Mohegan Sun Casino at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas to launch and manage the property’s sportsbook. Additionally, Betfred revealed a partnership with the Vegas Golden Knights, solidifying its status as the Official Sports Betting Partner of the renowned sports franchise in Nevada.

Following in the footsteps of BetMGM, Betfred has become the second premium sportsbook to team up with the Golden Knights. The UK-based operator aims to introduce its mobile sportsbook offering to the Nevada market by 2023, with plans to launch in time for the start of the college and professional football seasons.

Betfred expanded its reach to Ohio and Virginia, with Ohio sports betting launching on Jan. 1, 2023. The company made a bold move by offering early payouts to bettors holding futures bets on the Cincinnati Bengals to win Super Bowl 57 before the AFC Championship game. Despite the Bengals’ loss to the Chiefs, this strategy paid off for both the bettors and Betfred, helping the company establish a strong presence in a competitive market with established rivals like FanDuel, DraftKings, and Caesars.

The company is preparing to grow its presence in the Virginia sports betting market by announcing a partnership with Loudoun United FC in late 2022. This paves the way for the launch of the Betfred mobile sportsbook for Virginia bettors in 2023.

Maryland sports betting is heating up

Despite only launching in late November 2022, online sports betting in Maryland has already seen bettors in the state place over $1 billion in wagers. Maryland currently has seven other mobile sportsbooks available for bettors to use.

SuperBook Sports has just been given the green light by the Maryland Lottery to provide retail and mobile sports betting in Maryland. The official launch may be coming soon.

Fanatics made history by opening the inaugural retail sportsbook inside an NFL stadium at FedEx Field in January. This development sets the stage for Fanatics to introduce its mobile sportsbook in Maryland, with discussions underway to potentially acquire BetPARX for this endeavor.

Betfred is experiencing an exciting period of growth and expansion in the rapidly growing U.S. sports betting industry. It will be intriguing to see how its initial promotions compare to other Maryland sports betting bonuses as it strives to capture a significant portion of the market.
