Michigan Gaming Control Board to Contribute $6M to Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund

The Michigan Legislature has approved the Fiscal Year 2025 budget, which includes funding details for the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB). The budget allocates $6 million to the MGCB to promote responsible gambling statewide and $1.9 million to hire 14 new full-time staff members. Emphasizing responsible gambling is a priority for states and top sportsbooks.

The funding

Out of the $6 million allocated for responsible gambling support, $3 million has been designated for the Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund overseen by the MGCB in the Michigan sports betting market. This fund provides assistance to the 24/7 Gambling Disorder Helpline, which is directly managed by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services. Additional funds will be used for gambling research and youth education initiatives.

An additional $3 million will be allocated to the “Don’t Regret the Bet” responsible gambling campaign, which has been in operation since March 1, 2023. Governor Gretchen Whitmer must approve the budget before it can be implemented.

MGCB comments

In a statement released by the Michigan Gaming Control Board, Executive Director Henry Williams expressed his gratitude to Governor Whitmer and the Legislature for their support in enhancing the operations of the agency. He highlighted the commitment to strengthening the agency and its regulatory efforts through the addition of FTE positions. Williams also noted the MGCB’s increased contribution to the Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund as a proactive step towards responsible gaming. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the integrity of the industry and prioritizing the well-being of Michigan citizens.

The state of Michigan continues to see strong revenue from sports betting apps and retail sites, with the MGCB reporting solid monthly earnings in May despite a decrease in betting activity. Residents have a variety of Michigan sportsbook promotions to take advantage of.
