Ohio sports betting continued to demonstrate its strength on Friday, with wagering activity remaining robust since legalization 16 months ago. Our top sports betting sites have consistently seen double-digit monthly holds during this time.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission’s April revenue report revealed that Ohio sports betting apps and retail providers have collectively generated over $10 billion since their launch, making Ohio the fastest state to reach this milestone. This surpasses the achievement of the Arizona sports betting scene, which took 20 months to reach the same mark. Ohio is now the 12th state to surpass a $10 billion lifetime handle.

FanDuel continued its dominance in the Ohio sports betting market in April, leading in handle, revenues, and hold rate. bet365 also made waves by securing a solid third place as one of Ohio’s most popular legal sports betting sites.

$674.2 million April handle

In April, Ohio’s sports betting apps and retail providers collectively received $674.2 million in wagers. The majority of this amount, approximately 97.5%, was generated by Ohio sports betting apps, with brick-and-mortar casinos contributing the remaining $3.1 million. Ohio residents had a variety of Ohio sportsbook promotions available to them during this time.

Ohio’s legal sports betting handle increased by 29% year-over-year, reaching almost $515.2 million in April 2023. However, it decreased by 16.7% month-over-month from the previous period fueled by the NCAA Basketball tournament, generating $802.6 million in wagers in March.

The handle numbers for the first four months of 2024 show a slight decrease compared to last year. Ohio bettors have wagered $2.97 billion with local providers, reflecting a 1.6% decline from the previous year.

$74.1 million in adjusted gross revenue

In April, Ohio’s top sportsbooks saw a total of $74.1 million in adjusted gross sports betting revenue, marking a 15.9% increase from the previous year. This growth was consistent with the 15.9% increase from the previous month, despite a significant increase in the amount of bets placed.

In April, Ohio sports betting apps accounted for $72.8 million, representing approximately 98.5% of the state’s total revenue for the month. The rest of the revenue came from retail sources.

Revenue growth was boosted by a hold rate slightly below 11%, particularly seen in month-over-month comparisons, considering the win rate in March was only 7.9%. Ohio sportsbooks have achieved a double-digit hold in 13 out of the 16 months they have been in operation.

Ohio sportsbooks contributed $14.8 million to state and local coffers in taxes from April’s revenue, bringing the year-to-date total to $63.9 million. This is $18.7 million higher than the amount paid in taxes during the first four months of 2023.
