The May 2024 sports gaming revenue report from the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) shows promising results for the top sports betting sites, mirroring the positive trends seen nationwide.

The report showed a 36.9% rise in handle compared to the previous year, with more than $611.6 million bet in the Ohio sports betting market. May marked the eighth straight month with a handle surpassing $600 million, bringing the state’s total handle to over $11 billion.

Where it went

Ohio sports betting apps controlled the market, making up more than 97% of the total handle with $595.2 million in wagers, while retail sportsbooks only accounted for $16.4 million.

DraftKings earned $20.1 million in revenue, while FanDuel generated $30.6 million. Together, online and retail sportsbooks brought in a total adjusted gross revenue of $67.2 million, marking a 16.4% increase from the previous year.

Other sportsbooks

In May, bet365 ranked third with $45 million in handle and $4.7 million in revenue. Following closely behind were BetMGM, Caesars, and ESPN BET in fourth, fifth, and sixth place.

Ohio legalized retail and online sports betting on January 1, 2023. This new law allows for up to 25 operators to obtain a Type A license for online wagering and up to 40 Type B licenses for retail sportsbooks.

As of now, there are 19 online sportsbooks and 18 retail sportsbooks in operation in Ohio. With the addition of May’s figures, the state’s sports gaming revenue for 2024 has exceeded $384.4 million.
