As we gear up for the second major of the golf season, our top PGA Championship matchup picks feature Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy as the frontrunners in the betting odds according to our top golf betting sites.

The top players in golf are assembled at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky for the 2024 PGA Championship, the second major tournament of the year. Scottie Scheffler is back on the course after welcoming his son, Bennett, while Rory McIlroy comes in hot off a win at the Wells Fargo Championship.

The defending champion, Brooks Koepka, is ready to defend his title after winning at Oak Hill Country Club in 2023. With three previous PGA Championship victories since 2018 and a recent win at LIV Golf Singapore, Koepka is in excellent form and prepared to maintain his reign at this prestigious event.

Scheffler maintains his position as the top player in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) and is the favored bet in the PGA Championship odds.

These are our PGA Championship picks for Valhalla Golf Club, determined by the odds from our top sports betting sites and rated on a scale of 1 to 5 stars for confidence.

Jason Day vs. Min Woo Lee ⭐⭐⭐

In our first PGA Championship tournament matchup, Australian golfers Jason Day and Min Woo Lee are paired together, representing two generations of talent.

After finishing T-15 at Valhalla in 2014, Day went on to win the 2015 PGA Championship. He recently placed T-4 at Quail Hollow in the Wells Fargo Championship and is currently ranked in the top 15 in strokes gained: around-the-green and SG: putting.

Lee has struggled in 2024, with only one top 10 finish to show for it. His performance at last year’s PGA Championship resulted in a tie for 18th place at 2-over par. Despite making the cut in the following three majors, including this year’s Masters, Lee has not been able to gain strokes in all areas of the course like Day. While he excels with his driver, ranking 10th in SG: off-the-tee, Lee’s overall performance may prevent him from finishing with a lower scorecard than Day.

This rating is three stars because both players have shown volatility, with Lee having an advantage off the tee on a long course like Valhalla. However, I have more faith in the experienced player, who recently performed well in a Signature Event and excels in scrambling and making crucial putts for birdies and pars.

FanDuel offers the best odds at -115.

Brooks Koepka vs. Bryson DeChambeau ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Koepka and DeChambeau are both competing in the LIV golf tournament, so it’s no surprise that DraftKings has them matched up in a 72-hole tournament prop bet.

Koepka, the current PGA Champion, ended with a score of 9-under at Oak Hills in 2023. He recently secured a victory at LIV Singapore and has already claimed three wins at the PGA Championship. Koepka’s impressive T-15 finish at the 2014 PGA Championship suggests he is in good form heading into Valhalla for the upcoming tournament.

Dechambeau’s strong start at Augusta National quickly turned into a nightmare, with his approach shots and putting failing him in the last two rounds. Despite this, he is favored at -110 to outperform Koepka’s final score, as he has shown success at the PGA Championship in the past and possesses a powerful driver suited for the course at Valhalla. Evans Santiago is keeping an eye on DeChambeau for his PGA Championship first-round leader predictions.

In the end, our pick is Koepka as the favorite to win this head-to-head matchup at -120 odds. He has a strong track record at this event and is riding high on confidence from his recent win. It’s best not to second-guess this bet.

The most favorable odds are -120 on DraftKings.

Xander Schauffele vs. Ludvig Åberg ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The most favorable head-to-head matchup to consider is found at Caesars, where Schauffele is pitted against Åberg, offering a strong opportunity for a confident play.

Åberg pulled out of the Wells Fargo Championship before Round 1 because of knee pain. Although he is a strong off-the-tee golfer, he often ends up in the rough despite his distance. On the other hand, Schauffele’s inability to match Rory McIlroy’s performance in the championship should not affect our assessment of him in this matchup against Åberg.

Schauffele is currently ranked eighth in SG: off-the-tee and seventh in SG: approach. Additionally, he is among the top 45 in both SG: around-the-green and SG: putting. With few weaknesses in his game, Schauffele has achieved eight top 10 finishes in 12 events played this season.

Åberg is new to the PGA Championship and is managing a knee injury, while Schauffele has finished T-18 or higher in four of the last five PGA Championships.

The odds of -170 for this matchup are slightly lower than the other two, but he is well-equipped to compete and likely to finish with a better score than Åberg. Despite Åberg’s second-place finish in his debut at Augusta National last month.

Caesars offers the best odds at -170.

How to bet on golf

To bet on golf successfully, it is important to be knowledgeable about the different types of bets available and how to analyze player performance. Start by learning about the various common bets in golf, such as outright winner bets, each-way bets (which include both winning and top finishes), head-to-head matchups, and proposition bets on specific events like hole-in-ones or individual player performances on certain holes.

After determining the types of bets you want to make, investigate player information, course conditions, recent performance, and other important factors that could impact results. Consider player stats, recent tournament results, past performance on the course, and any injuries or changes in form that could affect a player’s play.
