Previewing the 2024 Senior Bowl, where top college football players will shine, we provide picks and predictions using the latest odds.

The Senior Bowl has been the top all-star game in college football for 73 years, despite changes in team names. Recently, the National team has won three consecutive games against the American team.

In five of the past seven Senior Bowls, the winning team has secured victory by a double-digit margin. The most recent example was the National team’s 27-10 triumph, led by former Fresno State QB Jake Haener, who earned MVP honors before being selected by the New Orleans Saints in the draft.

Senior Bowl picks: Team National vs. Team American

In the past two years, Team National has dominated Team American, outscoring them 47-20. Since switching to this format, Team National remains undefeated with a combined margin of victory of 74-44 in three games.

This year, Team National has an impressive quarterback rotation, featuring Sam Hartman from Notre Dame, Michael Penix Jr. from Washington, and Bo Nix from Oregon. It seems almost unfair to have two of the top three Heisman vote-getters on the same team. With their collective experience and Hartman’s impressive stats from last year, where he was one of only seven quarterbacks to throw for 3,500 yards and 35 touchdowns, we anticipate that they will make a significant impact on the team.

Hartman set an ACC record with 110 touchdowns during his five seasons at Wake Forest before transferring to Notre Dame. He is joined by a talented group of quarterbacks on Team National, including Georgia’s Ladd McConkey and Florida State’s Johnny Wilson and Louisville’s Jamari Thrash, both of whom are All-ACC wide receivers.

Ian Valentino, an NFL draft scout, gave his analysis of the first day of Senior Bowl practice, with seven out of his eight standout players coming from Team National.

Offenses often struggle to come together smoothly due to their limited familiarity with each other. However, Team America faces a daunting challenge on defense as they prepare to contain Penix, Nix, and Hartman, each of whom brings a unique set of skills ranging from exceptional running ability to precise deep ball accuracy.

Team American’s quartet of quarterbacks, including Spencer Rattler, Joe Milton, Michael Pratt, and Carter Bradley, may have the drive to impress scouts and boost their draft stock. However, the quarterbacks on Team National have shown a higher level of success this season, giving them the edge.

Senior Bowl preview

The Senior Bowl is often seen as the premier All-Star Game in college football and marks the beginning of the NFL Draft season, with over 900 representatives from all NFL teams expected to be present. All participants have finished their college careers and a significant number of them are likely to be selected in the upcoming NFL Draft, as over 100 draft picks from the last three years have previously played in this game.

Team National is led by Jeff Ulbrich, defensive coordinator for the New York Jets, while Team American is guided by Terrell Williams, assistant head coach and defensive line coach for the Tennessee Titans. Both teams have the opportunity to train for a week under the supervision of different NFL coaches.

In the previous year, 40 players from the Senior Bowl were drafted in the first two days of the NFL Draft. This year, five of Mel Kiper’s top nine quarterbacks (Penix, Nix, Rattler, Pratt, Milton) and five of his top 10 offensive linemen (Taliese Fuaga-Oregon State, Tyler Guyton-Oklahoma, Jordan Morgan- Arizona, Kingsley Suamataia- BYU, and Patrick Paul- Houston) are participating in the Senior Bowl.
