Ross Chastain’s season-ending win in Phoenix was only three months ago, but the 2024 NASCAR season kicks off on Monday with the Daytona 500.

The close-quarters race always brings unpredictable moments, and chaos is a common sight during the Great American Race. This is why the odds on drivers for NASCAR’s official season opener are so long, making betting on superspeedways thrilling yet risky.

The race became even riskier due to bad weather, leading to the postponement of the Daytona 500 to Monday at 4 p.m. ET. This is the first time the event has been postponed since 2012.

The stage is ready, with Joey Logano leading the pack at Daytona for the first time ever. He faces a challenge from 39 determined drivers, all eager to kick off the season with a victory.

Here are our top bets and NASCAR picks for the 2024 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, along with the odds from our recommended sports betting sites (confidence level rated on a 1-5 star scale).

Daytona 500 predictions

Joey Logano (+1200 via BetMGM) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Nine years have passed since Logano secured his first and only Daytona 500 win. The two-time Cup Series champion has competed in 30 races on this track, earning 11 top-10 finishes. Among those, eight were top-five finishes, with a second-place finish in the 2023 season opener.

Logano secured the pole position for the start of the race with a strong qualifying performance on Wednesday night. Despite leading the field at the beginning of the first duel race, he ultimately finished in seventh place. His strategic decision to avoid a chaotic situation towards the end of the race proved to be a wise move.

The most recent driver to win the Daytona 500 from the pole position was Dale Jarrett in 2000. In the fall race of 2015, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was the last driver to win from the pole, during the same season that Logano won the spring race.

Christopher Bell (+2000 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

After a lackluster performance in practice and qualifying, doubts lingered about Toyota’s speed heading into Monday’s competition. However, those concerns were put to rest when a Camry emerged victorious in both duel races.

Tyler Reddick won the first race, while Christopher Bell claimed victory in the second. Despite starting 16th out of 21 cars on the grid, the No. 20 car skillfully navigated through a major wreck to secure the win.

In eight career starts at Daytona, Bell has not yet claimed a victory and has only completed half of the races. His top finish in the Daytona 500 was in 2023, where he finished third after leading 20 laps.

Jimmie Johnson (+8000 via BetRivers) ⭐⭐⭐

Johnson is embarking on a new chapter in his illustrious career starting this Monday. As a newly inducted hall of fame driver, he will be racing in Daytona for the second time, this time in a car that he owns. However, instead of driving a Chevy like he did when he won seven Cup Series championships, Johnson will be behind the wheel of a Toyota.

Nevertheless, superspeedway racing serves as a great equalizer, and Johnson’s impressive track record ensures he remains a contender for victory. With two Daytona 500 trophies and a win at the 2013 fall race under his belt, Johnson has a total of 39 starts on this track, boasting 16 top-10 finishes and 12 top-five finishes.

Johnson narrowly beat J.J. Yeley in the initial duel race to secure his place in Monday’s starting lineup. Despite losing crucial track position towards the race’s conclusion, he managed to come out on top.

Both duels were won by Toyotas, which will provide a speed advantage to the entire Legacy Motor Club team, particularly benefiting the experienced driver Johnson.
