Throughout the entire season, Zach Edey, a standout player for the Purdue Boilermakers, was the clear frontrunner for the 2024 Wooden Award, as confirmed by the college basketball odds on our top March Madness betting platforms. Edey ultimately secured his second consecutive victory for the prestigious award.

After more than 40 years, a college basketball player has won the Wooden Award in consecutive seasons. Zach Edey of Purdue, a favorite across top sports betting sites throughout the season, received the honor on April 10th.

Despite falling short against the UConn Huskies in the men’s national championship game, Edey led the Boilermakers to their first Final Four since 1980 and their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament final since 1969.

If Purdue had upset UConn, the favored team in the March Madness odds, Edey would have been a sure bet for the March Madness MVP title after scoring 37 points in his final college game. Despite not winning the national championship, Edey has now joined Ralph Sampson as the only other player to win the Wooden Award twice.

Following his impressive performance in college basketball, including winning the Wooden Award in 2022-23, Edey continued to showcase his dominance in the following season. He played a key role in helping Purdue secure a Big Ten regular-season title and reach the national championship game. As a result, he was the early favorite to win the award in 2023-24, with +175 odds at top sportsbooks.

Even though Purdue was upset as a No. 1 seed in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last year, it did not affect Edey’s Wooden Award odds for this season. He remained the favorite throughout the year, to the point where it became almost comical that the odds were still being posted with Edey as the clear frontrunner.

Purdue not only achieved team success by reaching the national championship game this season, but Edey also showed significant improvement compared to last year. The 7-foot-4 big man averaged 25.2 points per game (up from 22.3), 12.2 rebounds, 2 assists (up from 1.5), and 2.2 blocks in 39 games. With the highest points and second-highest rebounds per game in the country, Edey had the stats and analytics to support his case for winning the award.

Edey was the top MVP scorer at EvanMiya and was considered the most essential player in the country. It’s no surprise that he had odds of -900 or lower since February. He continued his strong performance in the NCAA Tournament, with averages of 29.5 points and 14.5 rebounds. The big question now is if he can succeed in the NBA.

Wooden Award odds movement

It may be hard to believe, but Edey started the season with favorable odds from our top March Madness betting sites, despite winning the Wooden Award last year.

The price didn’t stay low for long, as the Purdue star’s odds continued to shorten every few weeks while the Boilermakers made their case for the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. Edey’s dominant performance was a key factor in Purdue finishing as the second best team in the country this season.

In early March, Edey’s odds of winning the award were solidified, making him the clear favorite with no other player standing a chance. Throughout the season, his odds went from +175 to as low as -5000, solidifying his place as one of the greatest big men in college basketball history.
