We Asked ChatGPT to Make a 2024 NFL Mock Draft, Make Every 1st Round Pick
After teaching ChatGPT the concept of a mock draft, we tasked it with creating a 2024 NFL mock draft in anticipation of the first round on Thursday night.
With the growing integration of artificial intelligence into our everyday routines, there is a chance to tap into its potential by addressing real-world inquiries. We chose to utilize this tool to investigate important subjects, such as predicting the initial picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, all while avoiding a negative future outcome.
For example, we could analyze the type of beefy offensive lineman that Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh prefers and question whether Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton will be able to resist choosing a quarterback who could potentially trigger his well-known sideline tantrums.
The NFL Draft is a rollercoaster of feelings, bringing optimism to certain teams looking to improve their chances of winning the Super Bowl, but also disappointment to others. It is a highly anticipated event in the sports world, sparking discussions about which new players will shine and potentially win awards like NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Although ChatGPT is unlikely to become the leading NFL draft expert, it offered a unique perspective on what may unfold on Thursday night in Detroit, considering the NFL draft odds from top sports betting sites. Additionally, we have crafted our own NFL Draft predictions.
How to teach ChatGPT to make an NFL mock draft
Surprisingly, connecting a group of names with NFL teams proved to be a more challenging task than anticipated for ChatGPT. It required hours of teaching ChatGPT how to create a mock draft, including explaining the concept of a mock draft, emphasizing the significance of draft order, ensuring it only selected eligible players, emphasizing the priority of quarterbacks for certain teams, and factoring in potential trades for specific teams.
Gauging its knowledge
Immediately after defining a mock draft, I requested ChatGPT to generate a mock draft for the 2024 NFL Draft with no additional input. My intention was simply to gauge its current capabilities and determine the amount of training required for it to produce a coherent mock draft.
In its initial mock draft, it used the 2022 NFL Draft order and chose Malik Willis as the No. 1 pick. Surprisingly, the draft included players from various draft classes spanning from 2022 to 2026, including Oregon Ducks wide receiver Evan Stewart.
Educating it with NFL draft information
Upon learning that we would be starting anew, I began to brief it on the details of the 2024 NFL Draft. I provided the draft order and instructed it to adhere strictly to this order. Additionally, I presented a roster of approximately 50 top prospects in the 2024 NFL Draft, all of whom had been highly touted or rumored as potential first-round selections.
After running a few mock drafts to ensure its understanding, ChatGPT still struggled to grasp the concept. It frequently selected the same player multiple times and deviated from the draft order. I had to consistently remind ChatGPT that once a player is chosen, they are no longer available and that the draft order cannot change unless there is a trade.
After some initial successful mock drafts, I started incorporating team needs based on NFL.com for each pick. It took a few attempts to emphasize the importance of the quarterback position over others. I then introduced the idea of trades, explaining that teams in need of a quarterback often try to move up in the draft to secure their future franchise player. This new approach significantly improved the accuracy of the mock drafts.
Running our official mock draft
After building a strong knowledge base on team needs, trades, and positional value, I felt confident enough to provide ChatGPT with an official list of players for the mock draft. I combined the top 50 prospect rankings from two highly respected draft analysts, Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network and Dane Brugler of the Athletic.
Those two are widely regarded as top experts in their field, with connections to insiders in NFL war rooms who provide them with valuable insights on how various prospects are perceived by teams throughout the league. In conclusion, I inquired with ChatGPT about the possibility of conducting a final mock draft utilizing this roster of players.
We went through each pick, with me giving ChatGPT the team needs for each franchise and discussing whether certain teams were rumored to be looking to trade up for a quarterback. Here are the outcomes.
Please note that any recommended NFL draft bets provided by an AI chatbot are intended for entertainment purposes only. It is advised to exercise caution when placing any wagers based on this advice.
ChatGPT NFL mock draft
1. Chicago Bears – Caleb Williams, QB, USC
It was expected that Caleb Williams would be chosen by the Chicago Bears, as he has been linked to the team for months. The former Heisman winner is highly regarded as one of the top QB prospects in recent memory and is the favorite to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. Williams is anticipated to shatter franchise passing records in Chicago during his rookie season.
The chances of going No. 1 are extremely high at -10000 according to bet365.
2. Washington Commanders – Drake Maye, QB, UNC
The intrigue surrounding LSU QB Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders at the No. 2 pick has intensified. While Drake Maye’s chances of being selected second have recently improved, with rumors suggesting that Washington’s new general manager Adam Peters may favor him, the latest buzz now points to Daniels reclaiming the spot.
FanDuel has listed the odds of going No. 2 as +370.
3. New England Patriots – Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU
The New England Patriots have traded former first-round QB Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars and are now planning to select a QB with their upcoming pick. It appears that they may choose between Daniels and Maye if Washington does not pick them first. Despite head coach Jerod Mayo hinting at the possibility of trading the pick, ChatGPT advises against passing on the Heisman winner.
FanDuel has the odds of going No. 3 at +400.
4. Arizona Cardinals – Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio State
Even though ChatGPT suggested that the Arizona Cardinals could be a potential trade partner for a team seeking to move up for a quarterback, the team ultimately decided to address their need for a go-to pass catcher by selecting Marvin Harrison Jr. as their top non-QB prospect. Harrison is considered the best non-quarterback in the class and will provide the Cardinals with a much-needed WR1 option. ChatGPT believed that Harrison was ranked too highly for the Cardinals to pass on.
Bet365 has the odds for going No. 4 at -220.
5. TRADE: Minnesota Vikings (from LA Chargers) – J.J. McCarthy, QB, Michigan
ChatGPT strongly believed that a QB trade could happen at this spot, as the Chargers have multiple needs at key positions like OT and WR. With the Minnesota Vikings holding multiple first-round picks, they were able to easily move up to No. 5 to select former Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy. Minnesota has been interested in McCarthy for a while, and now the Chargers have picks at Nos. 11 and 23 to address their own needs.
The odds of going No. 5 are +450 according to FanDuel.
6. New York Giants – Rome Odunze, WR, Washington
If the New York Giants are unable to draft one of the top four quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft, it is likely that Joe Schoen will select one of the highly skilled wide receivers. Despite Malik Nabers usually being ranked higher than Rome Odunze, ChatGPT chose Odunze, who is ranked as the WR2 by Daniel Jeremiah. Odunze, a former Washington Huskies wide receiver, fits the X-receiver role that Brian Daboll’s offense has been missing.
The odds to be the No. 6 pick are +300 on FanDuel.
7. Tennessee Titans – Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame
If Joe Alt is still on the board at No. 7, the Tennessee Titans would be wise to select him. With one of the weakest offensive lines in the league, the Titans could greatly benefit from Alt’s skills. Additionally, new head coach Brian Callahan has hired his father Bill as the offensive line coach, who is known for his expertise in developing talented linemen. This combination makes Alt a strong and logical choice for the Titans.
FanDuel has set the odds at -140 for going No. 7.
8. Atlanta Falcons – Dallas Turner, EDGE, Alabama
Despite speculation that a defensive player may not be selected in the first 10 picks of the draft, Dallas Turner is highly likely to be picked up by the Atlanta Falcons. With the team in need of pass rush assistance following John Abraham’s departure in 2012, ChatGPT selected the top athlete among the three leading edge rushers in the class.
FanDuel has set the odds for going No. 8 at +225.
9. Chicago Bears – Brian Thomas Jr., WR, LSU
Until now, the mock draft had been fairly predictable, but one interesting aspect of ChatGPT taking the lead was its ability to mix things up by not consistently matching the same players with the same teams. While many expected Nabers to be picked by the Bears, ChatGPT surprised by choosing his teammate Brian Thomas Jr. for Chicago instead. When questioned about this decision, ChatGPT explained that the Bears might prioritize Thomas Jr.’s size and vertical speed over Nabers’ attributes.
The odds of going No. 9 are +10000 according to FanDuel.
10. New York Jets – Malik Nabers, WR, LSU
If the New York Jets were to miraculously acquire Nabers, it might be the only thing to pull Aaron Rodgers away from his darkness retreat or halt his podcast appearances. Nabers’ incredible explosiveness has generated buzz, with some teams even considering him as their top wide receiver over Harrison. The thought of Nabers teaming up with Garrett Wilson is simply mind-blowing.
BetMGM has the odds of going No. 10 at +3500.
11. LA Chargers (from Vikings) – Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon State
The top 10 picks are dominated by quarterbacks and wide receivers, which sets up a perfect scenario for Harbaugh and the Chargers. They not only receive a second first-round pick from the Vikings, but they also have the opportunity to choose from the best run-blocking right tackles. Although there are concerns about Taliese Fuaga’s pass protection skills, he excels as a powerful run blocker and aligns with Harbaugh’s coaching style.
The odds of being the second offensive lineman drafted are +180 according to bet365.
12. Denver Broncos – Jared Verse, EDGE, FSU
The Denver Broncos had a clear need for a pass rusher, and ChatGPT chose Jared Verse over Laiatu Latu as the second one off the board. Verse possesses the qualities typically favored by the New Orleans Saints in first-round selections, including power, a strong motor, and effectiveness against the run. While also noting that Denver may opt for a quarterback in this spot, ChatGPT believes Verse would be a strong fit for the Broncos’ defensive lineup.
The chances of being drafted under pick 15.5 are +150 according to DraftKings.
13. Las Vegas Raiders – Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo
ChatGPT also considered a quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders before deciding to choose a different player who was in higher demand for a specific position. Quinyon Mitchell from Toledo is anticipated to be the first MAC player drafted in the first round since 2017 due to his impressive performances during the pre-draft evaluations. His exceptional length, ball skills, and athleticism make him a strong candidate to become the Raiders’ top cornerback right from the start.
The odds of being the first cornerback drafted are -125 according to DraftKings.
14. New Orleans Saints – Amarius Mims, OT, Georgia
This selection has me considering the idea that New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis may have been utilizing ChatGPT to assist in his draft decisions. It epitomizes the typical Saints pick, as Loomis has a strong affinity for traits and potential in the trenches. While past selections may not have panned out as hoped, Mims has shown promise of becoming a star player when he is in good health.
He could also fill in as a replacement for Zion Williamson on the New Orleans Pelicans, a team that Loomis had overseen for almost ten years inexplicably.
The odds of being the third offensive lineman drafted are +1600 according to bet365.
15. Indianapolis Colts – Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia
ChatGPT acknowledges the difficulty of a tight end breaking into the top 10, despite being a top prospect. Along with many draft experts, ChatGPT predicts Brock Bowers will be drafted by the Indianapolis Colts, providing Anthony Richardson with a versatile player who can excel in various positions and potentially become a standout in the league.
The chances of the Colts drafting Bowers are +375 according to bet365.
16. Seattle Seahawks – JC Latham, OL, Alabama
JC Latham is a favorite among draft experts, but the abundance of talented offensive tackles means he isn’t often projected in the top 12 picks. ChatGPT predicts he could fall further, potentially to the Seattle Seahawks at No. 16, where he could contribute at guard and provide depth at tackle right away.
DraftKings has set the odds of being drafted over pick 14.5 at +135.
17. Jacksonville Jaguars – Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama
One unexpected player who has fallen in this exercise is Terrion Arnold, considered by many top draft analysts to be the top cornerback in the class ahead of Mitchell. A drop for Arnold would be perfect for the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are in desperate need of a cornerback. If Arnold is available for general manager Trent Baalke at No. 17, it’s likely there will be even more surprises at his next press conference.
The odds of being drafted as the second cornerback are -110 according to bet365.
18. Cincinnati Bengals – Troy Fautanu, OL, Washington
While not a commonly linked player to the Cincinnati Bengals, Troy Fautanu could be a great fit for the team. Known for his time as a left tackle at Washington, Fautanu is seen as a versatile offensive lineman capable of playing multiple positions. This flexibility would be a valuable asset for the Bengals, who have faced challenges in protecting quarterback Joe Burrow. Fautanu could immediately compete for a starting role at left guard or right tackle.
BetMGM has set the odds of being drafted over pick 15.5 at -125.
19. LA Rams – Byron Murphy II, IDL, Texas
In ChatGPT’s mock draft, selecting Byron Murphy II as the fifth defensive player drafted is considered highly unrealistic. Most experts believe that Murphy is more likely to be the first defensive player chosen. However, if he were to drop in the draft, Rams general manager Les Snead would eagerly select him. The Los Angeles Rams are in need of a replacement for Aaron Donald, and Murphy is considered the most disruptive interior defensive lineman in the draft class.
The odds of being drafted over 14.5 are +120 on DraftKings.
20. Pittsburgh Steelers – Graham Barton, OL, Duke
Duke’s Graham Barton has emerged as a strong candidate to join the Pittsburgh Steelers, a team that has historically struggled with their offensive line. Barton, who excelled as a left tackle at Duke, is expected to transition to center in the NFL and could potentially secure a starting role with the Steelers right away. His skill in reaching the second level and maintaining balance in pass protection would greatly enhance the Steelers’ offensive capabilities.
The odds of being drafted under pick 20.5 are -125 according to BetMGM.
21. Miami Dolphins – Jackson Powers-Johnson, OL, Oregon
It seems that ChatGPT is a big fan of the center class featuring Barton and Jackson Powers-Johnson. Similar to Barton, Powers-Johnson addresses a significant need on the Miami Dolphins offensive line and is capable of starting at center or either guard position in Week 1. Placing Powers-Johnson in Mike McDaniel’s run scheme appears to be a major advantage.
The odds of being drafted under 31.5 are -150 according to DraftKings.
22. Philadelphia Eagles – Cooper DeJean, CB, Iowa
After the Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, general manager Howie Roseman made a misstep by signing James Bradberry in free agency. ChatGPT believes he can correct this error by acquiring a versatile and dynamic defensive back in Cooper DeJean. DeJean’s physicality makes him a standout at nickel position, but his speed and ball-handling abilities allow him to excel on the outside as well. Additionally, he brings excitement as an electrifying punt returner.
The odds of being drafted under 22.5 are -110 according to BetMGM.
23. LA Chargers (from Vikings) – Ladd McConkey, WR, Georgia
Before this selection, ChatGPT has mostly stuck to picking players commonly projected in the first round. While Ladd McConkey hasn’t been associated with the Chargers yet, if L.A. decides to trade with Minnesota, he could be the top wide receiver choice at No. 23. McConkey would provide Justin Herbert with a polished route runner who can create separation downfield. Additionally, his strong blocking skills would likely appeal to Harbaugh.
The odds of being drafted in the first round are -120 according to bet365.
24. Dallas Cowboys – Olumuyiwa Fashanu, OT, Penn State
Olumuyiwa Fashanu, once considered a top prospect in this mock draft, has unexpectedly fallen in rankings but is still projected to be selected within the top 15 picks on Thursday night. Known for his impeccable pass sets, the Penn State tackle was previously hailed as the best in his class during the summer. Should Fashanu be available for the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones will undoubtedly be thrilled. This selection would also enable Tyler Smith to continue playing at guard, providing an added benefit for the team.
The odds of being drafted over 13.5 are -162 according to FanDuel.
25. Green Bay Packers – Zach Frazier, C, West Virginia
The mock draft has gone off the rails (thanks to the McConkey pick), but this pick is surprisingly intriguing. The Green Bay Packers have been underwhelmed by Josh Myers at center, and shifting Zach Tom, a Pro Bowl-caliber right tackle, to that position seems like a questionable move. Zach Frazier provides Matt LaFleur with a tough and physically dominant option at center, bringing a strong presence to the offensive line.
You can get odds of +300 to be drafted in the first round on bet365.
26. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Marshawn Kneeland, EDGE, WMU
As I mentioned earlier, it’s pretty crazy. But there have been rumors circulating that Marshawn Kneeland could possibly be a first-round draft pick. If both he and Mitchell get picked in the top 32, it will mark the first time since 2014 that two MAC players have been selected in the first round. Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Jason Licht has a track record of choosing D-linemen with long arms and explosive abilities early in the draft, which fits Kneeland’s profile perfectly.
The odds of being drafted in the first round are +350 according to bet365.
27. TRADE: Denver Broncos (from Cardinals) – Bo Nix, QB, Oregon
Understanding the significance of the fifth-year option for rookie quarterbacks, ChatGPT recommended that the Broncos trade with the Cardinals to re-enter the first round. This move allows Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort to bolster his defense with additional draft picks, while also giving the Broncos the opportunity to develop a promising young quarterback.
This is a rare opportunity for Bo Nix to enter an NFL quarterback room as the most skilled passer. No matter your opinion of Nix, it should not be difficult to outperform Zach Wilson, Jarrett Stidham, and Ben DiNucci.
Chances of being selected in the first round: +150 according to bet365.
28. Buffalo Bills – Adonai Mitchell, WR, Texas
Given the abundance of talented wide receivers in this year’s class, ChatGPT did not see the need for the Buffalo Bills to trade up, allowing general manager Brandon Beane to secure a potential Pro Bowl player in Adonai Mitchell. Despite being a divisive figure, Mitchell possesses a unique combination of route running ability and ball skills that would complement QB Josh Allen perfectly.
The chances of being drafted are over 27.5 at -174 odds on FanDuel.
29. Detroit Lions – Laiatu Latu, EDGE, UCLA
It seems that ChatGPT is showing more concern for Latu’s health issues than the average person, as the talented pass rusher slips down the draft board. Latu previously had to step away from football at Washington due to medical reasons, but has since been cleared at UCLA. There is a possibility that he may continue to fall in the draft, but if the Lions are able to pick him up later on, it would be a missed opportunity for the rest of the NFL. Latu, known for his impressive hand fighting skills and variety of pass-rush moves, is considered the most skilled in his class.
The odds of being drafted over 17.5 are +175 according to bet365.
30. Baltimore Ravens – Tyler Guyton, OT, Oklahoma
The Baltimore Ravens are known for making picks that leave other teams regretful. While there is a possibility for them to trade back, if they decide to stay put, they will likely focus on improving the offensive and defensive lines, a sentiment shared by ChatGPT. Tyler Guyton from Oklahoma, a former tight end with impressive athleticism, is seen as a rising star who could potentially start at right tackle in his rookie season.
The odds of being drafted over pick 29.5 are +210 according to bet365.
31. San Francisco 49ers – Chop Robinson, EDGE, Penn State
Another potential trade back candidate for a team in need of a quarterback and looking to utilize the fifth-year option is the San Francisco 49ers, according to ChatGPT. The chatbot suggests that the 49ers are prioritizing individual talent over accumulating more draft picks. When I questioned why they should pick Chop Robinson instead of making a trade, ChatGPT argued that the available players at their pick offer more value than additional picks. The robot makes a valid point, as Robinson’s quick first step would create a formidable duo alongside Nick Bosa.
There is a +160 odds of being drafted over 26.5 via DraftKings.
32. TRADE: New York Giants (from Chiefs) – Michael Penix Jr., QB, Washington
ChatGPT is quite the entertainer, strategically saving its most captivating move for the end. Recognizing the Kansas City Chiefs’ pressing need for a wide receiver, ChatGPT opted to trade back with the Giants in order to stockpile more picks, given the abundance of talented receivers still available on Day 2.
The Giants have decided that Daniel Jones is not the solution at quarterback, and they are bringing in Odunze to New York. Schoen and Daboll are also choosing to draft his college QB, making for an exciting and unpredictable pick.
The odds of being drafted by the New York Giants are +900 according to BetMGM.
