After the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58, let’s review the betting trends and top NFL picks throughout history.

It is not surprising that betting on a team to win the championship before the season starts results in a bigger payout compared to betting on the same team before the Super Bowl. However, it is worth noting that six of the last 10 Super Bowl winners were not the favorites going into the game.

In their Super Bowl appearances, the 2015 Broncos, 2017 Eagles, and 2021 Buccaneers were all considered significant underdogs with odds of +140 or greater. However, the Los Angeles team, despite starting the 2021 season with 12-1 odds to win the Super Bowl, ended up being the biggest pregame favorite with -200 odds to secure the title.

At the beginning of the season, the Chiefs were considered the top contenders for the title with odds of +600, closely followed by the 49ers with odds of +1000.

Long-shot Super Bowl winners

Over the years, we have witnessed numerous underdog Super Bowl champions. The best value on the futures market can often be found in the middle of the regular season, depending on when a bettor decides to invest in a team.

  • 2023 Kansas City Chiefs (+110)
  • 2022 Kansas City Chiefs (+100)
  • 2020 Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+140)
  • 2017 Philadelphia Eagles (+170)
  • 2015 Denver Broncos (+140)

Comeback Super Bowl winners

The rise of live (in-game) betting has created more chances for profitable bets on the Super Bowl. This was evident in the 2024 Super Bowl, where the Chiefs overcame four different deficits to secure their second consecutive championship.

This marked the third instance in Patrick Mahomes’ career where his team overcame a double-digit deficit to secure a Super Bowl victory, offering ample opportunities for bettors to cash in on the Comeback Kid. The San Francisco 49ers were on the losing end of two of these comebacks, squandering a 10-point lead in each of their last two championship games.

Although live betting is a relatively new concept, making it difficult to determine the exact odds for Super Bowl winners facing deficits, it is likely that many of these teams would have had favorable odds leading to significant payouts.
