On Saturday, the Houston Texans will face the Indianapolis Colts in a crucial game with a playoff spot at stake. Both teams have 9-7 records and the winner will secure the final wild-card spot in the AFC. Additionally, there is a chance that the victor could also win the AFC South division.

Should the Jacksonville Jaguars be defeated by the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, the victor of Saturday night’s game will claim the division title.

Earlier this year, the Jaguars looked poised to win the AFC South after the Colts lost their starting rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson in Week 5 and the Texans had a slow start with their rookie signal-caller C.J. Stroud.

Despite this, both teams have built momentum over the course of the season, with the Colts led by backup quarterback Gardner Minshew and the Texans following Stroud.

Texans ML (-118 via FanDuel) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

In Week 2, the Colts narrowly won a road game against their opponents, despite being outgained in yards and first downs. The teams have evolved since then, so I anticipate a different outcome when they face off again.

The Texans have fully embraced their identity with Stroud leading the way, as he was considered the favorite to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. However, his chances took a hit after a disappointing performance and injury in Week 14.

Stroud made a triumphant return last week, demonstrating why this team is a force to be reckoned with when he is leading the way. The rookie quarterback impressively completed 75% of his passes, marking his fourth game with a completion rate over 70% in his last seven starts. He finished the game with 213 yards and a touchdown, contributing to a solid 26-3 victory over the Titans.

He is now up against a Colts secondary that he dominated with 384 yards in Week 2, and it appears to be in a more precarious situation. Starting corner Kenny Moore, who has played the most snaps (1,033) and ranks fifth in PFF grade (76.0) on the Indianapolis defense, is questionable with a back injury. Another corner, Chris Lammons, who missed practice after his first career start last week, is also questionable with an ankle injury.

The Indianapolis offense is also struggling as three starters, center Ryan Kelly (ankle), guard Quenton Nelson (ankle), and tackle Braden Smith (knee), are all questionable for Saturday’s game. This could be problematic for Minshew, who ranks 30th in completion rate under pressure (45.6%) out of 38 quarterbacks with at least 200 dropbacks.

Houston’s ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks has been impressive this season, ranking fifth in pressure rate (25%) while blitzing at the sixth-lowest rate (21.1%). Since Week 13, the team has accumulated 21 sacks, the highest in the league, leading to a significant improvement in DeMeco Ryans’ defense and elevating them to a top-10 unit in the latter part of the season.

The Texans are ranked 12th in weighted DVOA, while the Colts are ranked 22nd. Houston has outperformed their division rivals throughout the season in terms of net yards per play and net EPA/play. With Stroud back in the lineup, it’s no surprise that early bets are favoring the road team. I’ll be following suit.
