Nathan MacKinnon+700+500+550

Nathan MacKinnon

Top odds: +700 at DraftKings | Probability implied: 12.5%

At 28 years old, MacKinnon is in the prime of his career, with the speed of a greyhound and the strength of an agitated bull. He reached a new milestone in the 2023-24 season by scoring 51 goals, surpassing the 50-goal mark for the first time and showing that he is continuing to improve.

In 82 games, he scored 140 points, finishing 36 points ahead of Avalanche skater Mikko Rantanen. MacKinnon exceeded his previous season’s point total by 29 points and will need to maintain or improve upon his performance in the upcoming 2024-25 season.

It is uncertain if Valeri Nichushkin will make a return after entering Stage 3 of the player’s assistance program, while Gabriel Landeskog has been sidelined for the past two seasons due to a persistent knee injury.

It is anticipated that Landeskog will make a comeback in the 2024-25 season, but there is uncertainty surrounding how well he will adjust after being away for so long. This could potentially add more pressure on MacKinnon, although he has proven to handle it well in the past, like he did in the 2023-24 season.

If he wins the 2024-25 Hart Trophy, the +700 odds at DraftKings will result in a $70 profit, exceeding potential returns at FanDuel and BetMGM by $20 and $15, respectively.

I think McDavid has a good chance to win the award, but his odds of +180 are too high for me.

Miro Heiskanen+800+1300+1100

Miro Heiskanen

Highest chance of winning: +1300 on FanDuel | Probability of winning: 7.14%

Heiskanen is on the verge of a breakout season, just as McDavid is on the cusp of winning the Stanley Cup. I predict Heiskanen will shine in the 2024-25 season. When it comes to betting, Cale Makar is the safest option with odds of +250 and +300. The Avalanche’s star defenseman is the clear favorite and for good reason.

Although Quinn Hughes, Roman Josi, and Evan Bouchard are strong candidates, Heiskanen brings a unique and special skill set to the table. Among them, Heiskanen stands out for his exceptional skating ability, surpassing even Makar, the talented defenseman for the Stars.

At just 24 years old, he has an impressive ability to time his offensive contributions as the third or fourth man, shining as a talented quarterback on the potent Dallas power play. His skills are complemented by his team’s high ranking as the league’s third-best offensive team last season, making them a top contender in our 2025 Stanley Cup predictions.

Heiskanen scored 54 points in 71 games during the 2023-24 season, which was a decrease of 19 points from his previous best of 73 points. However, he excelled in the playoffs with 16 points in 19 games. I believe he will continue to perform at a high level in the upcoming season and I am very excited about the value he offers at FanDuel.

A winning $10 bet on the +1300 odds will result in a profit of $130.

Igor Shesterkin+600+600+600

Igor Shesterkin

Top odds: +600 on BetMGM | Probability of winning: 14.29%

I was considering choosing Jake Oettinger, who offers great value at +1300 at FanDuel. However, Shesterkin has consistently been one of the league’s top goalies. Despite a somewhat disappointing regular season in 2023-24, Shesterkin returned to his exceptional form during the postseason.

He will be highly motivated to have a bounce-back season and will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2024-25 season. Players often perform their best during contract negotiations.

Although he doesn’t need to prove himself to anyone, the former Vezina winner has numerous incentives to consistently perform at his best in the 2024-25 season. A strong showing could potentially give the Russian goaltender even more bargaining power when negotiating a new contract.

Our top sports betting sites provide odds of +600, which could result in a $60 profit if successful.

How to bet on NHL awards

Betting on NHL awards requires a patient approach and the ability to make strategic decisions at the right time.

Typically, the ROI is greater with long-term investments rather than game picks or short-term plays. However, there are exceptions for overwhelming favorites like McDavid for the 2024-25 Hart Trophy. It is important to assess whether it is worthwhile to support McDavid at odds of between +175 and +180.

If you are considering supporting McDavid, it might be best to hold off for now. Although it is unlikely that he will have a slow start like he did in the previous season, it is possible that his odds will not improve in the near future, at least until the season is well underway.

Consider a multitude of factors

Considering all factors is crucial. Take for example my prediction that Shesterkin will win the Vezina Trophy. As a former winner with a stellar playoff performance, despite a lackluster regular season in 2023-24, it’s unlikely that a player of his talent will underperform for two consecutive seasons.

Before committing to your future award play, it is essential to thoroughly examine their contract status. Shesterkin will become an unrestricted free agent in 2025-26, indicating his motivation to secure the best possible deal when negotiating a new contract or extension.

Another important factor to consider when choosing a winner is durability. It is crucial to assess whether the player you are supporting is prone to injuries and how their performance might be affected if a key teammate is unavailable.

A prime example of this is MacKinnon, who filled in for Landeskog and, for a portion of the 2023-24 season, Nichushkin’s absence.

Check if the player has previously won the award and determine if they are currently improving or on a declining trend.

When choosing a candidate for the Hart Trophy, take into account the player’s position. Defensemen have not received this award since 2000, and goaltenders are less likely to win compared to forwards. As for the Norris Trophy, keep in mind that it is typically given to the top offensive defenseman. Players on teams with strong offenses and high scoring tend to have a greater chance of winning this prestigious accolade.

Understanding NHL futures odds

Utilize our odds calculator to calculate the potential payout and implied probability of a wager. Futures odds for end-of-season awards are stable and seldom experience significant changes.

When odds are at +100, it signifies a 50% chance of winning and is known as even-money. For instance, a successful $100 bet at +100 odds results in a $100 profit and a total payout of $200. On the other hand, negative odds indicate a probability of over 50%, with the payout decreasing as the number becomes larger. The greater the negative number, the higher the likelihood of winning.

The greater the positive number, the longer the odds, the greater the potential profit, and the lower the likelihood of winning. For instance, with odds of +200, there is a 33.33% probability of winning. If you bet $100 and win, you will earn a profit of $200 and receive a total payout of $300.

Changes in player rankings will occur during the season due to factors such as point production, streaks of good or bad performances, the team’s overall success, injuries to key players, or health issues affecting other important teammates.

In addition to the Art Ross, Rocket Richard, and Jennings Trophy, the majority of awards in hockey are determined by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association or general managers. It’s important to recognize that these awards are largely based on subjective opinions.
