Hart Trophy favorites

Connor McDavid (+180 via FanDuel)

McDavid will start the 2024-25 season as the reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner, having earned the award in his debut Stanley Cup appearance. He joins Reggie Leach as the only non-goaltender on a losing team to have received this prestigious individual honor, with Leach accomplishing the feat in 1976.

As the offseason progresses, McDavid is the clear favorite for the 2024-25 season. He ended the 2023-24 campaign with 132 points in 76 games, ranking third behind Kucherov and MacKinnon.

McDavid and Kucherov both achieved the rare milestone of recording 100 assists in a single season, joining the elite company of Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, and Mario Lemieux.

McDavid’s performance on home ice at Rogers Place was outstanding, as he scored 83 points in 37 games. Despite the Oilers’ Game 7 loss to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final, McDavid was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for his exceptional play.

Nathan MacKinnon (+700 via DrafKings)

In 2024, MacKinnon claimed his first Hart Trophy by narrowly beating out McDavid and Kucherov. The Colorado Avalanche superstar had a standout season in 2023-24, recording a point in all but two home games and scoring 51 goals – breaking the 50-goal mark for the first time in his 11-year career.

With captain Gabriel Landeskog out for the entire 2023-24 season, MacKinnon had to shoulder a heavier offensive burden.

MacKinnon had to play without Valeri Nichushkin for approximately one-third of the season. This will be a recurring challenge for MacKinnon as Nichushkin has entered Stage 3 of the player’s assistance program due to a violation of Stage 2 terms.

Auston Matthews (+1000 via FanDuel)

The top goal scorer in the world narrowly missed being named a finalist for the 2023-24 award, despite scoring 69 goals and coming close to achieving a milestone 70th goal. However, he was thwarted by numerous goalies and hit the post multiple times.

Although Matthews had an impressive number of goals, he faced some inconsistency which kept him from surpassing McDavid, Kucherov, or MacKinnon in the top three. Despite this, he still managed to accumulate 106 points, ranking sixth in the NHL.

In 2022, Matthews received the award and has scored a minimum of 40 goals on six occasions, with two instances where he scored at least 60 goals.

Hart Trophy player to watch

Connor Bedard (+4000 via BetMGM)

Bedard is widely predicted to dominate the competition for the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie in the 2023-24 season. Despite only playing 68 games, the No. 1 pick of the 2023 entry draft racked up an impressive 61 points while averaging 19:47 of ice time per game.

The Chicago Blackhawks are ready to bring in another game-changer with the second overall pick in Friday’s draft, but they must focus on making significant improvements this offseason following a disappointing 23-53-6 record in Bedard’s first year.
