The recipient of the Norris Trophy in 2022 narrowly missed achieving his desired outcome in 2024, losing the title of best defenseman. The 2024 runner-up is eager to make a comeback in the upcoming 2024-25 season.
Makar is widely considered the NHL’s most agile defenseman on the ice, and is predicted to win multiple Norris Trophies in the future. It comes as no surprise that he is the early favorite for the 2024-25 season.
Makar ended the 2023-24 season as the second-highest scoring defenseman, accumulating 90 points in 77 games for an average of 1.17 points per game, leading in that category. Despite his impressive performance, Makar’s plus-15 rating was not enough to compete with Hughes, who finished with a commanding plus-38, ultimately affecting his chances of winning the Norris in 2023-24.

For years, the Norris Trophy has been favoring the league’s top offensive defenseman. Hughes, who topped all defensemen with 92 points (17 goals, 75 assists), narrowly edged out Makar by two points. This performance was ultimately what earned him his first Norris Trophy.
The young 24-year-old defenseman led all defensemen in even-strength points with 54, ranked second in power-play points with 38, and ended the season with a plus-38 rating, which was the best among the finalists and the fourth highest overall.
Makar had the highest plus/minus among the last four Norris Trophy winners, recording a plus-48 in 2022.
Hughes completed the 2023-24 season with 75 assists, becoming only the fourth defenseman in NHL history to achieve three consecutive seasons with 60 or more assists. He joined the elite company of Ray Bourque, Bobby Orr, and Paul Coffey.

In 2021, Fox received an award and has remained one of the league’s top defensemen. Although he did not meet high expectations in the 2023-24 season, Fox is ready to compete for his second Norris Trophy.
