Although the scoreline may suggest otherwise, Argentina defeated Canada 2-0 for the second time in the 2024 Copa America. It is important to note that the game was not a repetition of Groundhog Day, as it took place during a different month and played out differently than previous matches.

Argentina’s win in the semifinals of the Copa America secured their spot in the final and dashed Canada’s hopes of a historic tournament run. The victory also caused a shift in the betting odds, with Argentina becoming even stronger favorites as they prepare to face their next opponent.

In other quarterfinal matches, Uruguay narrowly defeated Brazil in a penalty shootout, while Colombia dominated Panama with a 5-0 victory. The two teams will face off on Wednesday, and Young Quigley provides his analysis in the Uruguay vs. Colombia prediction.

Colombia remains a compelling contender in the Copa America, currently ranked third in the odds and boasting several dark horse candidates for top goal scorer.

2024 Copa America favorites

Argentina (-163)

Argentina has established themselves as the most intimidating team in the tournament and the clear favorites to win the Copa America after dominating the Group Stage. Lautaro Martinez scored two goals against Peru to solidify their position and become the leading goal scorer in the competition.

However, it was a different L. Martinez who scored Argentina’s only goal in the quarterfinal. Lisandro Martinez found the back of the net in the 35th minute, which seemed to secure the win until Kevin Rodriguez equalized in stoppage time. The standout performer of the match was goalkeeper Emil Martinez, who made two crucial penalty kick saves to lead his team to the semifinals.

The defending World Cup champions had a smooth semifinal match against Canada, choosing to rest Lautaro but still securing a 2-0 victory. Julian Alvarez scored for the second time in the tournament, and Messi scored his first goal of the competition.

The next opponents for Argentina will be either Uruguay or Colombia, both of whom would present the biggest challenge the team has faced in this tournament.

Uruguay (+340)

Uruguay is one of the few teams with odds shorter than +1000 to start, and after defeating the Brazilians, the window to bet on them at a good price is closing.

The Sky Blue team, despite being tied with Argentina for the most titles in Copa America history (15), has not had much success at the tournament in recent years. Their last victory was in 2011, and their last runner-up finish was in 1999. However, they managed to finish at the top of Group C with a 3-0 record and a plus-8 goal differential. Their controversial lone goal in the 1-0 win over the host Americans in the final match helped them advance to the next round. They ultimately defeated Brazil in penalty kicks after a scoreless draw.
