In 2023, Ronald Acuna Jr. topped all players in stolen bases and is currently the favorite to lead in stolen bases for the 2024 MLB season according to the latest odds from top MLB betting sites.

In 2024, there was a significant change in the stolen bases market due to MLB’s rule adjustments in 2023. The increased size of bases was not the only factor impacting this shift; new rules restricting pick-off attempts and hastening pitchers’ deliveries also played a role in increasing stolen bases across the league.

Could the trend line continue into 2024 with the high leaguewide success rate for stolen base attempts in the previous season? With top base-runners likely to attempt more steals, we may see stolen base numbers not seen in years.

In 2023, the total number of stolen bases in MLB increased by a staggering 40% to reach 3,503, marking the highest number in a season since 1987.

MLB 2024 stolen base leader favorite

Ronald Acuna (+210 via FanDuel)

In 2023, Acuna topped MLB with 73 stolen bases, marking the first time in his career that he led both leagues. This was the second time the outfielder led the National League after stealing 37 bases in 2019. Given his impressive track record, it comes as no surprise that our top sportsbooks have listed him as the favorite for 2024.

Throughout his career, the superstar has faced numerous injuries. However, in 2023, he was able to stay healthy and played a career-high 159 games, resulting in an impressive number of steals. His stolen base statistics have consistently been outstanding, and if he can maintain his health, he has a strong chance of repeating as the NL MVP in 2023.

MLB 2024 stolen base leader odds: Contender

Esteury Ruiz (+340 via FanDuel)

Ruiz led the AL as a rookie in 2023 and was favored to lead the majors before an injury in July. Despite being sidelined, the Oakland Athletics outfielder has the talent and performance to justify a bet at his current odds.

After a slow start in August with only 10 stolen bases in 22 games following his absence, the speedster made a strong comeback in September by swiping 14 bases in his final 25 games. He ultimately finished second in total stolen bases with 67, trailing only Acuna.

Ruiz’s impressive steal total, only six fewer than Acuna’s despite significantly less playing time, positions him as a strong contender to lead the majors in steals in 2024 if he can remain injury-free.

MLB 2024 stolen base leader odds: Long shot

Trea Turner (+4500 via FanDuel)

This market is not ideal for finding long-shot opportunities due to the high level of skill and aggression displayed by the top base-stealers.

Turner was once a dominant force in the market, consistently leading the NL in stolen bases in 2018 and 2021 with his incredible speed. Despite only stealing 30 bases in his first year with the Philadelphia Phillies, he did so with a perfect success rate on 30 attempts.

With his flawless performance on the base paths in 2023, I would be surprised if Turner doesn’t continue to excel in 2024 and provide additional value for his team. Additionally, his consistent health compared to Acuna and Ruiz makes him a strong competitor despite the low odds.

MLB 2024 stolen base leader odds analysis

It is challenging to find value in this market, as the top players in stolen bases significantly outperform the rest of the competition.

However, with MLB’s recent rule changes, anyone has the potential to become a base-stealer. This doesn’t guarantee a sudden jump from five steals to 50 for players. Rather, it provides an opportunity for mid-tier contenders to be more aggressive on the base paths in 2024, potentially leading to an increase in steals across the league compared to previous years.
