The competition for the MLB Cy Young award is still up for grabs in both the American League and National League, with a new frontrunner possibly emerging soon in the AL.

Corbin Burnes of the Baltimore Orioles has been steadily rising in the rankings at our top MLB betting sites, surpassing Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers at some of our best sportsbooks.

Currently, Skubal remains the favorite to win the award after leading the odds for several months. However, Garrett Crochet, the ace of the Chicago White Sox, is close behind with the third-best odds.

After a rough start against the Baltimore Orioles in mid-June, Zack Wheeler in the NL has bounced back and improved his odds. Despite this, there are still numerous contenders vying for the title of World Series favorites who could surpass Wheeler if he falters once more.

In contrast to the MLB MVP odds, there are numerous standout pitchers in both leagues who have a shot at winning the top pitching award.

Here is our analysis of the top 2024 Cy Young odds in both the American and National League, as well as some potential MLB betting picks.

AL Cy Young odds analysis

As of late, Skubal has shown vulnerability after a strong start to the season. Despite only allowing more than two earned runs twice in his first 13 starts, the lefty gave up four runs in consecutive outings against the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves on July 4, 2024.

Burnes and Crochet were able to narrow the gap between them. However, in his first start of July, Skubal struggled against the Minnesota Twins, giving up three earned runs in six innings. This allowed Burnes to potentially overtake Skubal as the favorite at some of our top sports betting sites.

In his debut season with the Orioles, Burnes has been outstanding. He boasts the second-lowest ERA in the AL at 2.28 and has recorded 99 strikeouts in 106 2/3 innings. Burnes has pitched a minimum of six innings in 12 consecutive starts and has surrendered more than two earned runs in only four of his 17 starts.

If you’re a fan of pitchers who excel at striking out batters, Crochet is the one for you. He currently tops the MLB in strikeouts per nine innings (12.5) and total strikeouts (141), with an impressive five games out of his last 10 starts where he reached double-digit strikeouts.

Even though Skubal has a lower ERA than Crochet (2.45) and more strikeouts than Burnes (119), if he can maintain his performance, a $10 bet on his +240 odds could result in a $24 profit. Additionally, his shortest odds of +180 suggest a 35.71% chance of winning.

NL Cy Young odds analysis

On July 4, 2024, Wheeler seemed on the verge of being overtaken by his competitors. He was overwhelmed by Baltimore, surrendering eight earned runs and four home runs in only 4 1/3 innings on the mound.

His latest performance was his worst of the year, putting his lead in the NL Cy Young odds at risk. However, instead of crumbling under the pressure, Wheeler has bounced back with impressive stats in his last three starts, allowing just five earned runs, zero homers, and striking out 20 batters in 19 2/3 innings.

Wheeler’s impressive turnaround has resulted in him having the fourth-lowest ERA (2.74), the fourth-lowest WHIP (0.99), and the fifth-most strikeouts (119) in the NL. Additionally, he is the top pitcher for the team with the second-best odds to win the World Series.

However, Wheeler is up against tough competition from Chris Sale, Tyler Glasnow, Ranger Suarez, and Max Fried. In particular, Sale appears to be a formidable threat to Wheeler.

The 35-year-old starting pitcher for the Braves has the third-best ERA in the NL at 2.71, the third-highest number of strikeouts at 127, and the lowest WHIP at 0.91. If Wheeler struggles, Sale or a hard-throwing pitcher like Glasnow could surpass him.

If the Phillies’ ace can maintain his performance, with his +180 odds indicating a 35.71% chance of success, a $10 wager on his +200 odds will yield a $20 profit.

How to bet on the MLB Cy Young

To bet on the Cy Young winner, choose a reliable sportsbook that offers Cy Young futures. Look at the odds for different pitchers; for example, if Pitcher A has odds of +300 and Pitcher B has odds of +800, Pitcher A is the favorite to win. Determine the amount you want to bet and place your wager. If you bet $100 on Pitcher A at +300 and they win, you will receive $400 in return ($300 in profit + $100 initial bet). Monitor pitcher performances during the season to assess the progress of your bet.

Keep in mind that a pitcher’s odds of winning the Cy Young award can change based on their performance, injuries to themselves or their competitors, and the success of their team. Additionally, public betting trends can also affect the odds, as sportsbooks may adjust them to mitigate their risk.

Expert analysis and predictions play a significant role in shaping people’s betting decisions, ultimately impacting the odds. By being aware of these factors, you can make more informed bets and take advantage of any favorable shifts in the odds.

How to read MLB Cy Young odds

Odds are commonly displayed as either +300 or -150. Positive odds, such as +300, represent the profit you would make on a $100 bet. For instance, betting $100 at +300 odds would result in a $300 profit, plus your initial $100 stake, for a total of $400. On the other hand, negative odds like -150 indicate the amount you need to wager to win $100. Therefore, betting $150 at -150 odds would earn you $100, in addition to your $150 bet, amounting to $250.

The odds for winning the Cy Young Award are a reflection of the implied probability of a pitcher’s success. Lower odds, such as +200, indicate a higher chance of winning, while higher odds, like +1000, suggest a lower likelihood. These odds are adjusted by factors such as pitcher performance, injuries, team success, and betting trends.

For instance, if Pitcher A has odds of +300 and Pitcher B has odds of +800, Pitcher A is perceived as the more probable winner. Placing a $100 bet on Pitcher A and them emerging victorious would yield a $400 return ($300 in profit + $100 initial wager). Familiarizing yourself with these odds aids in making well-informed betting choices and evaluating potential profits.
